1D movies

3D movies are completely intelligible.

2D movies also work quite well. The human brain is flexible enough to extract meaning from flattened pictures without even noticing a problem.

So.

1D movies.

A horizontal line (obviously) onto which all of the action is projected. This would focus the minds of movie-makers more on matters such as plot and characterization, and less on special effects.

       Excellent, [MB]! Bun.[+]

However, this system still requires considerable distracting manipulation of neck and eye muscles to follow the action across the screen (line), obfuscating p & c.

Couldn't all the action simply be projected onto a single point? Project the point near the top of the tiny screen so tall persons do not block your view.

Same idea, one less wasted dimension,
Boomershine, Sep 23 2010

It may be an inconvenient truth but it's certainly the way to make a point, or a series of points.
infidel, Sep 23 2010

I'm not sure that the technology to project in 0D can be developed in the near future, [Boomer]. However, your forward thinking does you credit.
MaxwellBuchanan, Sep 23 2010

       [+]

The more so for [Boomershine]'s extension of the idea. Of course, the even more logical extension would be the projection of the action onto nothing at all. The resulting movies could then be broadcast via radio, saving time and expensive projection equipment.

//Couldn't all the action simply be projected onto a single point?//

In the old days, when your mother turned off the TV, the 2D image would shrink to 0D and glow like a star, and you would stare at it, imagining all the great shows you were missing.

[MB]//However, your forward thinking does you credit.//

Thank you. I get a better view of things up on your forward thinking shoulders.

//...the 2D image would shrink to 0D and glow like a star, and you would stare at it, imagining all the great shows you were missing.//

       There's your technology.

That fading dot was my favorite part of TV. I miss it.
Boomershine, Sep 24 2010

//... so tall persons do not block your view...//

<sigh> I'm in the back row again, am I?
Grogster, Sep 24 2010

Indeed not, [Grogster]. I was thinking of you when I suggested projecting the point to the top of a screen. This is just another advantage of the so-called 0D system. Less image area to be blocked by tall persons.
Boomershine, Sep 24 2010

Ah, there's a good lad! (pass the popcorn) [+]

So a Zero-Dimensional movie theatre would basically be a radio with a lightbulb in front of it.

If it were a colour-changing LED array, or similar, it could be used to set the mood.

However, it would necessarily include a time dimension, meaning that if you wanted to have true 0D, you'd need an illuminable dot that is not illuminated.
Alx_xlA, Sep 24 2010

I already have a 0D television. When I turn it on, there's a very small point of light on the front of it within which I can imagine the 3D visual dynamics of whatever show I'm watching, whether it be "The Archers", or "The Shipping Forecast", or, if I am unable to reach the "Off" button in time, "You and Yours".
hippo, Sep 24 2010

//But it’s not really 0D, as it has the dimension of time. And amplitude.//

Exactly, [IT]. Thanks for pointing this out. And neither is 1D really 1D.

The dimensions of time (which we don't usually count in video displays--4D?) and amplitude are what allow 1D and 2D to work at all. Without them (especially amplitude) they would be invisible.
Boomershine, Sep 24 2010

Removing the elements of time and amplitude would leave us with a package in which the entire plot and characters co-exist at any point in time and generate no dynamic output.

This package could conveniently be encoded in a series of static, visible symbols, arranged on laminar surfaces. I proposes we call this a book.
Twizz, Sep 24 2010

I suppose there could be a screen of micro dots and each audience member would get a set of really powerful magnifying glasses and watch any one of every film that was ever made. Your head would need to be held rigid in a clamp, to prevent even the most tiny of movements, so that probably makes it a stupid idea.
xenzag, Sep 24 2010

Och, dammit. My telly is only set up to play in the vertical axis... Another great [Jb] purchase that I can connect up to my Betamax video, HD-DVD, and Sony Mini-Disc.
Jinbish, Sep 24 2010

[Twz][xen] Now you are beginning to see the beauty of [Max]'s ingenious idea.
Boomershine, Sep 24 2010

I'd certainly like to see more work put into plot dimension.
doctorremulac3, Sep 24 2010

Another plotted point would give some direction to the story, perhaps?
infidel, Sep 24 2010

In this medium, if a critic wrote "The characters are flat and two-dimensional" would that be praise?
mouseposture, Sep 25 2010

A 0D movie is what you would see if you looked into the business end of a single-mode optical fiber streaming said movie signal in optical binary format. You would need to think fast, though, to decode it into the proper human form.
sqeaketh the wheel, Dec 20 2010

I'm glad you thought it was great twice.

You may need to either start or stop taking the tablets.
MaxwellBuchanan, Jan 20 2018

I tried watching a minus 1D movie once. I think it was something about achieving some state of emptyness or bliss or somesuch. I got bored and turned it off.
