A lot of businesses nowadays are finding it more economical to have their customers ring up their own merchandise rather than paying some shmoe to do it for them. Unfortunately, customers don't always have a good experience with these machines and some of them get really fed up with the whole process of scan, place in bag, repeat.... these people are the same ones who couldn't figure out how to work a vending machine if their life depended on it.... I think a lot of their problems come from not being able to pay attention for a long enough time to finish ringing up their order.

I propose a simple solution to this problem. First, the screen should have a red/purple color offset and a pair of those 3-d glasses so that the important words stick out at them when they are ringing up their merchandise; and second, the earphone speakers on the 3-d glasses should make those old-school 8 bit Atari sound effects (perhaps the 'one up' tone) instead of a monotone beeping noise whenever somebody scans their stuff into the computer. The idea is that through positive reinforcement, these people will become experts at this newfound necessity of life, that is, self-checkout.... either that or they will starve from not being able to buy food when they need it.

Aha. Can't believe no-one has commented on this before. I can see there might be selective pressure to eliminate the colour blind if the glasses were red- green. These people would starve before being able to reproduce. Result: no more colour blindness genes in the population, but sadly also no more tetrachromats.

Wow! First posts after almost a year. For what it is worth (which is almost nothing), I'm not interested in saving the shop money. If they want me to play checkout, let them pay me the going rate as a discount from my shopping.
