People wait in line in this restaurant in groups of five.

When they reach the serving counter, the chef puts out five meals. Cards with large clear type explain what is offered.

The person with an "A" ticket ($15) gets to pick first. The person with an "A" ticket ($15) also gets to pick first from the next seating, if they don't like any of the five offered.

The person with an "B" ticket ($13) gets to pick next.

The person with an "C" ticket ($9) gets to pick next.

The person with an "D" ticket ($5) gets to pick next.

The person with an "E" ticket ($3) gets what is left.

They all get drinks and find seats. The next five step up to the window.

Menu is subject to continuous change based on the cooks choice and what foods are available in the market.

Virtues:

A. Such a restaurant would usually be a surprise for the patrons. For the diner who gets bored easily.

B. Very little food would be wasted because the menu could match the inventory, and the "e" ticket plate could contain pot scrapings, leftovers and mistakes.

Gump says: "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what your gonna get." I want to shout "Chocolate, fool! Your gonna get chocolate!"

The //get drinks// bit is disappointingly brief.

//Such a restaurant would usually be a surprise for the patrons// Given that the average price for the meal is £9, I think the surprise would probably necessitate antibiotics.

       1. Prices and format would be tweaked, until some sort of line formed and remained. A line out the door is best kind of advertisement. Maybe guest chefs or Tuesday is Italian or contests, whatever gets That "It's too crowded, nobody goes there anymore." quote to come to life. (Yogi Berra?)

       2. Five seems a lucky number. Two couples and a third wheel make five. Family of four and the babysitter make five.

Who decides who gets the A-E cards?
MaxwellBuchanan, Jul 04 2013

[MaxwellBuchanan], when I read it I assumed that the customers would pick their own tickets based on how much the choice is worth to them. If more people buy a particular kind of ticket, they'll just have to wait longer to all be served.

Seems a bit unfair to vegetarians.

It'd be so funny to see, now and then, all 5 get the same meal...
