ADA Trebuchet
A method for direct non-stop entrance to any above grade floor of a building. | |
The ADA Trebuchet can be used to make any building externally accessible to people who would otherwise need a ramp or elevator. Water would be pumped in or out of the counterweight to adjust the force with which the wheelchair-bound or elderly folk are flung. (Note that at the apogee of the flight,
vertical velocity is zero.)
Careful placement and calibration will be necessary for each installation.

Helmets, and padding, would indeed be useful. Cushioning the landing seems like a separate challenge, in and of itself. Proper trajectory to ensure a gentle landing is paramount.
These are observations from experience: The ‘elevator lifts’ that many older buildings are equipped with are a sorry excuse for access, and are very uncomfortable to ride resulting in bruises. In practice many older buildings are completely inaccessible, often due to non-functional retrofitted lifts. Other, functional, retrofitted lifts require a key to access, and finding the person with the key is not possible from outside a building. To add injury to insult, the alleged person with a key often does not exist, nor does the key. Baked ideas to provide access do not in fact universally provide access, and are not universally applicable to all buildings, and are not available at low cost. Certainly, the Trebuchet may not be the preferred solution in every situation. |

Presumably, yes. I was thinking that only one location would be accessable to the trebuchet. No re-aiming allowed, it would be bolted down. Upon strapping in, it measures your weight, and adjusts the counterweight appropriately. Adjustment per user begets precision. |

I see no reason to limit the use of this device to the disabled or elderly, rather, anyone seeking an alternative to the front stairs is welcome to make a dramatic entrance. |

I wish I had mentioned in my original posting that the trip provided by the Trebuchet ends just after the apogee of a steep arc, resulting in nearly zero velocity at landing. The launch acceleration could be relativly gentle, provided that the lever arm is long. |

As for leaving the building... ah, um, hmm. That's going to require something completely different. Maybe a high-dive into the ballast storage tank. |
