A Thousand Sexualities (Screen)
We want to make romance inside of all of you

The boundaries between the sexes have become blurred; men have become far more feminised, women have no problem with partly tapping into their 'male' side, and vice-versa. The traditional sexual roles and images have been eroded.

The neurosciences and biochemistry too have reveiled that when a man and a woman have sex, their brains show a continuous chaos of impulses, from all types of hormones and signals -- a profile that would be hard to classify simply as 'male' or 'female'. A man's brain activates typical female responses during sex, and vice versa.

I have developed a device that represents this true state of things.

1. In the near future (or today already) non-invasive devices will have been developed with which you can scan brain activity pretty accurately. Let's assume that we have this kind of minimalist, lightweight scanner, which you can wear easily.

2. Connect it to the Sexuality Screen, have sex, and see what it gives.

3. The Screen can come in many guises. I made just one example: two translucent flat screens, with embedded micro-mems (wires or other). Each brain impulse (decoded by a simple software program) activates a mems-thingie. So the screen moves. (The movement can take on any form). It would be a bit like a 3-D equalizer, as you find it on your stereo.

4. Put the male and the female screen against each other. The effect would be a beautiful, chaotic, sublime struggle between the sexes, that has no longer any resemblance with our traditional sexual metaphors (of penetration, domination, colonisation, what have you).

5. The Sexuality Screen can be a table-top device, or you can hang it from your ceiling, like a lamp. It will be the spectacle of love-making, in a non-obscene way.

I made a grandiose picture of it.

So, the idea is ... a brain scanner that ... visualizes brain activity of two heterosexuals who have intercourse? While you stand in a corner and lecture?

Illustration looks like a nice backscratcher.

Seriously, I thought this was one of my most beautiful, elegant, creative and romantic ideas yet.

Sorry, but wtf? My sexuality is already a many-splendoured thing, thankyouverymuch. I like who I like, and obscure European philosophers very rarely come into the equation. Foucault can Foucoff - intimacy is always just something between two individual people. You can't make mass assumptions about how people choose to connect with each other.

//Seriously, I thought this was one of my most beautiful, elegant, creative and romantic ideas yet.//- then you better have this croissant for making such a supreme effort, even though I don't like the way it's written up +

But nobody is forcing you to use this device, is there? It's just a way of representing sexuality in a different way. I don't see what's so disturbing about that.

Ok, I cut out the dense part about the highly influential continental philosophers. Sorry for mentioning them.

Okay, I'll go with No: 2, minus the first 6 words.

I don't think sex would be necessary for something like this to work. I should be able to make a prosthetic screen synched to my brainwaves bump and dip all day long without sex.

The device would be really cool with a sort of feedback that sent electrical impulses back into the brain regions specializing in sexual stuff. Then those little bumps might turn into flowering twisty protrusions and pretty spirals of love!

p.s. why are there three gray vertical protrusions in the pic? They don't belong.

I'm not sure how participants will be able to associate the brain-wave representations with their subjective experiences. This is important, because without some fairly intuitive way for a viewer to 'read' the waves, the stuff on the screen is just going to look like a series of random shapes, isn't it?

pertinax, Jan 29 2007

Shouldn't sex be something shared between two people and the feelings they experience inside, not have a screen analysing it and their brain's sexual impulses at the same time? Where's the romance in watching back an erotic video tape of highly stimulated brainwaves?.. not that i'm into video tapes of that or any other nature (she swiftly adds).

[DN], I think it's a real time feedback. Recording it would be mostly worthless, yes.
