You may not have heard, but the earth's magnetic poles are going to flip: North will become South and vice-versa! It may take a while for this to happen and in the meantime it will be chaos.

Imagine: Boats and planes won't be able to navigate, maps will become confused and Boy Scouts will pop up all over the place lost!

The solution: The Adjustable Compass. As the poles move, you can reset the compass points to take account of the new coordinates. Lets say the poles flip completely overnight. You get up in the morning only to find that your bedroom is all un-feng shui'd! No probs - Adjust your compass by 180 degrees and readjust your room for optimal karma! Simple as that. Of course, if the poles only move by, say, 45 degrees, you may have to move your bedroom door otherwise the wardrobe might be in the way.

Oh, I hear you say. How will I know that the poles have flipped. Easy, you just subscribe to a new web site that I propose run along side this product - www.magneticflip.com. That will tell you the new coordinates of North and away you go.

Alternatively, you could buy the deluxe GPS enabled version. This would update itself automatically, much like an RDS clock.

Are there any engineers out there that could cook this up some more?

An example of a real adjustable compas [Bronzewing, May 03 2005]

Bun, just for, //only to find that your bedroom is all un-feng shui'd!//

While you're waiting for the poles to flip you could also use this to correct for magnetic variation (the difference between true and magnetic north) and show true north. The GPS version could do this automatically as well

Why don't we just all agree that red points toward south after the shift?

I think this has been baked, an adjustable compas has existed for centuries for Iron hulled ships that have to compensate for the effect of the metal hull. It's called a binnacle, this thing uses a complex set of adjustable magnates to corret the compas needle so it points to the correct direction on a metal ship. It will work just as well when the poles switch.

What happens to pigeons when the poles flip? Will they stop homing, or just end up in antipodeal locations? <hopes Trafalgar Square's antipode is somewhere in the middle of the Pacific, or an active volcano>
