Adjustable Hoods

A style of hoods for coats that would allow users to adjust the amount of coverage from the hood.

Sometimes, a large hood is great. It keeps the cold and snow out of your hair and maybe even your forehead, especially when its tightened with pull-strings.

But sometimes, the hood is abit too roomy, especially for smaller headed folks. The top of the hood may annoy the person, or even block his or her eyes, preventing proper sight, or requiring the person to hold the hood with one hand.

To alleviate the problem of hoods that are too big, I propose the attachment of velcro to hoods. The soft, fuzzy side would be in the inside of the hood, so as not to cause any discomfort to the wearer. The corresponding hard, plasticky hooks side of the velcro would be attached at the top of the hood. When a hood becomes a bother, wearers can simply roll the hood over itself on top and/or sides, and simply fasten with the attached velcro materials. The pull-strings should still work, even when the hood is rolled up a bit, allowing a secure fit, even in windy conditions.

The alternative would be to incorporate a device which would cause the wearer's head to expand or contract to fit the hood! I like this idea though +

Or get a bigger head. (Worked for me.)

       Not really.

I have a waterproof jacket which incorporates a roll up hood and it even has pull strings on the outside to adjust the front facial hole and the rear approximate head size...(linky)

Every piece of lint and pollen whirling around with the breeze will get stuck to the outside of your hood, though.

Just don't wear velcro mittens to scratch the top of your head.

I can make my head swell anytime I like.

       Oh. Oh...The OTHER head. Gotcha.

[silverstormer]: Your jacket apparently has a hood you can roll up and stuff into the collar, right? I couldn't find anything about the hood being "adjustable", at least not in any way that would help solve the problem I address.

[dintlu]: You bring up a valid point. Perhaps a cover flap for the outside velcro could be designed to prevent falling bunnies & such from sticking to your head (if you're not into decorative bunnies, that is).

On the other hand, having velcro on top of the kiddies' hoods could help Mom & Dad grab them with a mere touch of their fuzzy mittens. Just imagine that old Krazy Glue commercial of the guy hanging from a girder by merely holding onto his glued helmet, but the girder is a parent's mitten, the helmet is the velcro-equipped hood, and the guy is a little kid. :)

The hood on my coat is already adjustable. It's called a drawstring (but correct me if I have the wrong idea :-) ). And I can do a Kenny impression in it if I pull it really tight. Always a cheap way to amuse your friends.

& I've a snowboarding jacket with two adjustable staps on the side so you can fiddle around with peripheral vision. very handy. I'm not convinced the velcro hood would really be that useful - surely if you've a freakishly small head, you'd only need to make the adjustment once...?

Now, now. It's not polite to poke fun at the freakishly small-headed folks out there.
XSarenkaX, Nov 10 2003

I would like to adjust with the addition of two more os, thus making it a hooood.
bungston, Nov 10 2003

au contraire ,[XSarenkaX] - I wasn't poking fun at the FSH, I was concerned that a velcro adjustable hood (or hooood, or hod) might tempt them to continually change the size of said hood, thereby causeing tiring of their freakishly large hands, and that would be terrible!
