Uptake of electronic cash formats has been relatively slow, largely because of the cost of development and user resistance.

Using thin LEDs and polymer notes it would be possible to develop a layered wafer note that stores enough charge, from solar or ambient light collection, to activate RFID scanners This would allow banknotes that can be accessed electronically by retailers, allowing them to transmit advertisements to the face of the notes, as you pass within close proximity of their premises.

Advertising revenue defrays the cost of development, subsidising it while driving the public awareness campaign with their constant presence on your money.

Admittedly, this is far more likely to occur first with credit/debit cards than it is with cash. Cards tend to have a greater intrinsic value, and are already being loaded with solid state storage devices.

How much attention do you pay to your money? Personally I only bring bank notes out of my wallet when purchasing something, meaning that it would be advertising for the place that I am already buying something in. [-]

That wouldn't stop people from paying to advertise on it.

What's the bet we see this on credit cards, in the next ten years?

[Thanks for the changes; I like it better now, and hope you do, too.]

I thought this idea would simply propose using bills as advertising space.

Thanks, [jutta]. I must confess to having posted in haste, initially.

It was the outgrowth of a simple idea about sponsored money. I saw a news item yesterday, that Jack Nicklaus? was to feature on the Scottish 5 pound note, for this year's British Open golf tournament.

Context sensitive money could flash up "Need a loan?" whenever the note is by itself.
But the advertising would probably work best as a reminder or advice when you are about to make a purchase. The advice could be to shop elsewhere?

Or to upsell you, or remind you of special offers, or divert you to another part of the store, or...
