Instead of high school starting at some ridiculously early time, it should start at noon and go until 6pm or so. Sports and extracurricular activities (band, etc) could be moved to mornings.

Annotation:

High school is supposed to punish you and make strange demands on you so as to prepare you for "real life" (= working for The Man) while at the same time keeping you infantilized, socially useless, and powerless. Otherwise, they would have implemented your idea, or something even better, long ago.

There has been some argument in favor of later afternoon classes in lots of school districts. Kids often get into trouble during afterschool hours, before parents arrive home from work.

I'd start earlier than noon, but I would have no issue with school running until 5 PM or so. Not really an original idea, though.

Move to a different country. My school went from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm. Sports were interspersed in the school day as part of the academic curriculum. What you guys call extracurricular activities, and we called clubs, were during the long lunch break.

My son has school on Saturday as well, so count yourself lucky.

So they should be making students work in three eight hour shifts then....

Or make them work 18 hours a day, six days a week.

I went to a school where you had to wear straw hats and do lines in Latin. When this particular aspect of "real life" materialises (and I am still waiting), I am sure it will hold no fear for me.

"Doing lines" in class? That has a different connotation where I come from.
