Both simplifying and expanding car radio listening experience

I’ve seen ads for a hand held device that you can use to locate nearby services along the road as you travel (hotels, gas, restaurants etc…).

I suggest they ad to this a menu of radio stations, divided into classes, such as Country, Pop, Christian/Religious, Rock, Talk etc. You would be able to choose a class and it would display, in geographic order, a list of stations for you to try.

I know most people listen to Cds or scan when they travel, but this could somewhat simplify the process of finding a bearable station and tuning into the slightly changing acceptable vibs that fill the airways in whatever geographical area you may be in.

I would also add another twist that may seem contradictive, but would add a new dimension to the listening experience. It would be an electronic device that would allow you to transmit a signal (FCC Licensed?), that others could receive, showing what station you are tuned to. Simply a point and read device. (A sticker or electronic signal would identify you as a user of this service.) I imagine this being popular among the MTV crowd, who find voting on new music popular, but also expanding to all generations. When traveling there may be a number of reasons that a person may find it interesting to see what someone else is listening to. I think people are just naturally drawn to what others are doing. A person may be tempted to tune into a station displayed by an attractive member of the opposite sex as you pass, however copycatting may be a turn off, at times, but for whatever reasons people are attracted to what others are experiencing and this would be a positive way to share.

Sorry if my title is misleading. I considered several and none seemed to stand out particularly well. BTW- *Blues*

It's possible to detect the station that a particular radio is tuned to by monitoring the sympathetic resonance emissions given off by the tuning circuit. There are proposals to build active billboards that detect the station that a motorist is listening to and display an advertisement targeting a similar demographic.

This will almost undoubtedly lead to advertisers hijacking the radio bands by detecting the tuned station and broadcasting a narrow beam that will overpower the original signal and play the advertisements to the listener. Changing the station will only work for as long as it takes the broadcast box to re-aquire your station and tune back in. (probably as fast as you can change stations).

Car-to-car communications will no doubt be hijacked for similar purposes.

(-) for promoting the development of a technology which will force me to be exposed to even more unsolicited advertisement.

Don't worry [Freefall], what advertisers will do is use a focused sound wave pattern to put the advertisement right into your car. That way, you can't escape them even if you are listening to CDs or even turn your radio off.
