not a *total* ripoff of hippo's idea, but....
Picture a small, rigid-skinned dirigible with an exhaust port in the back; a medium-sized turbojet pokes it's nose downwards out of the bottom, centre'ish. Exhaust passes through a metal screen to catch stray HC's and is vented round the inside to provide
lift, finally exiting the port in the back to provide forward motion. Steering vents can allow for precise directional control.
Flight can consist of "balloon" type with only occasional firing up of the motor to maintain altitude, or "dirigible" type directed travel.
In-the-works: indirect heating which would allow use of entrapped water-vapor saturated air, or even steam :)

So what you basically want to do is run a zeppellin, but the thrust and control is coming from a harrier jump-jet style system (but with bigger, longer nozzles) rather than propellers? |

mmm... say about halfway between what you're thinking of and an hot-air balloon with a propane burner. The jet exhaust is used to provide buoyancy, then released to provide motive power and steering. |

I likes it! I don't think you need the skin to be rigid, though. Just a blimp, kept inflated by the turbine engine's pressure, and a directional nozzle on the back with a thrust reverser. |
