       Yeah. Bill Gates is sad.
Ah Supp, Oct 06 2011

I'm certainly very sad at this news. Apple products changed my life. (I'm sure millions can say that) I can actually remember the first time I ever saw a computer being used to create a page layout. It was an Apple using Pagemaker, a programme I subsequently really liked, and always preferred to QuarkXpress.

The big difference between Jobs and his equivalents - Jobs was a committed visionary who never allowed that vision to be compromised or diluted. Very sadly missed.

I foresee many "easter eggs" being programmed into Mac applications in honor of Steve Jobs. Maybe not to be seen today but on the anniversaries of this great man's death.

He might be missed, but this sounds like a "let's all"!
xandram, Oct 06 2011

I'm a little ashamed to say that I echo a part of what [21Q] said, but today is not the day. Jobs was a certified genius and like all other genius' he broke ground on new ideas and pissed some people off, including me, but the human race is a bit dumber and less original on average today and that is sad. Apple, NeXT, PIXAR, then Apple and iStuff, a grand legacy.

So I'd like to include two quotes of his, one on design that applies here at the HB and one one on death.

Steve Jobs on design: “To design something really well, you have to get it. You have to really grok what it’s all about. It takes a passionate commitment to really thoroughly understand something, chew it up, not just quickly swallow it. Most people don’t take the time to do that." “Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That’s because they were able to connect experiences they’ve had and synthesize new things. And the reason they were able to do that was that they’ve had more experiences or they have thought more about their experiences than other people. “Unfortunately, that’s too rare a commodity. A lot of people in our industry haven’t had very diverse experiences. So they don’t have enough dots to connect, and they end up with very linear solutions without a broad perspective on the problem. The broader one’s understanding of the human experience, the better design we will have. [Wired, February 1996]

Steve Jobs on life and death:

“No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true. “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” [Stanford commencement speech, June 2005]

Today is not the day to engage in a pathetic debate over operating systems, besides that "argument" was lost a long time ago.
xenzag, Oct 06 2011

Thanks for sharing your enlightened thoughts and those of Stamford Mister QED. I bet you can't wait to reach my years and die off to make way for fresh thinking. As for myself, I fully intend to put off the event until the very last moment. Amusing how many people hate Apple and all it stands for, yet fall over themselves in the rush to purchase products that appear strangely similar to Apple and incorporate Apple's ideas, also the ideas of other innovators. Get the log of wood from out of your own, where ever it is first.
Ah Supp, Oct 06 2011

IMHO, that well has dried up.

If you don't like it, don't buy it. This isn't Soviet-era Russia, where you had to save for fifteen years to buy your 4G smartphone and there were only two models to choose from: grey or green.
Alterother, Oct 06 2011

[21] You're starting to sound like an oul sour bake on the day that a fantastic person died. Why do you care what Apple does or doesn't do? We've heard all this Apple bashing before, and today of all days can you please just press the pause control?
xenzag, Oct 06 2011

I'm not a big Apple fan, but I deeply respect Jobs because he was "cool" despite not being an athelete, pop musician or tv/movie star. Hopefully his image will continue to inspire kids to be creative and passionate about technology (and the underlyng sci/math/engineering).

//At least I understand now why all of his products seemed half- done. Just watched an interview with him saying that once he got something 'pretty good' he just moved onto the next thing// Really? Apple's support for old products seems pretty good. I don't see Microsoft offering upgrades to the newest operating system for $30.
DIYMatt, Oct 07 2011

Alright, 21, if you're determined to rant on about Apple's products, then let me do some ranting of my own.

Android's scatterbrained approach to standardization and integration of their product's operating system is not even close to the iPhone's simple genius. In my Android phone I have a monstrous SD card that mostly sits there wasted because Android's operating system and app writers can't be bothered to utilize it. Thus my phone constantly screams that it's running out of memory because everything wants to be phone-resident. That's a very basic execution error.

As an integration engineer, I can tell you that that is primarily the result of a lack of focused product integration. Jobs, like all good CEO's, had the balls to say 'no' to good ideas in order to protect the best and keep the product consistent and focused, overall. The only thing I didn't agree with Jobs about was the fact that I happen to enjoy using all 5 of my senses, which to me means buttons. Simple, good old buttons that I can feel.

To do something simple on my Android phone like turn the screen backlight on in order to see it in daylight, I need to already be able to see the screen. Now, I've picked and chosen apps to help me do that in ways that aren't that cumbersome, but you'd think that a software designer would be intelligent enough to figure that one out as a part of the operating system, and tied to a button somehow. That's a mistake that Apple wouldn't have made.
RayfordSteele, Oct 07 2011

//You can bet your bottom dollar the world's next visionary won't be Bill Gates.// Really? Because I would consider the idea of the Gates foundation one of the best ideas Gates ever had. OK to be fair it is like 99% of his other ideas, stolen from others, (and as the Jobs quotes says, in one view 100% of all ideas are stolen) but still it is obviously good enough to get Warren Buffet (another guy who has to be pretty smart) to hand over Billions and Billions of dollars. Gates' genius is obviously implementation and business. As I mentioned before I am not a huge fan of some of Job's work, and I could say the same for pretty much anyone at that level because these people are visionaries with the bravery to make a decision and the tenacity to follow them through. Now some of these decisions are wrong, and many of them are right, but I give them credit for doing. This guy packed a lot of life in 56 years.

[21Q]//Just watched an interview with him saying that once he got something 'pretty good' he just moved onto the next thing, not dwelling on the products of the past.// I'm not even sure what this means as Jobs was a lunatic for perfection or at least what he saw as perfection. You can say lots of things about him, but not that he didn't care. I can only imagine this quote is out of context or one of Job's misdirections (link) like "people don't read anymore" and “It turns out people want keyboards…. We look at the tablet, and we think it is going to fail.” The guy got personally involved into shades of color in icons. He cared. You can say what he did was wrong, but he definitely cared. He remade the Apple TV to fit his aesthetic which I believe ruined the product, but not due to laziness. It was a lot of pain-staking labor.
MisterQED, Oct 07 2011

None of us (well, maybe some of us, but not YT) are saying Bill Gates wasn't a visionary of his time. I'm just saying that I think he's tapped out. I think he knows it, too; he's given over control of his company to the next generation of geniuses, and although he continues to focus on his philanthropic work, that too is now run by others. Gates has crowned himself monarch of his own personal empire, and like all good leaders, he's learned to delegate both innovation and responsibility to a hand-picked few. He's passed on the torch. When was the last time you heard him personally take credit for anything new at Microsoft?

I don't know the man; this is just conjecture.
Alterother, Oct 07 2011

[RS]// it's running out of memory because everything wants to be phone-resident. That's a very basic execution error.// No that is a superior knowledge of differing hardware. When the new MSP7 phones came out they tried to blend the SD memory with the onboard memory and they found that massive batches of SD cards are not up to the task, it is just a quality control issue. Also you are mixing the memory types up, the memory that your phone is running out of is fast memory. Phones can have up to three kinds of memory like my D3 systems RAM (sadly my D3 only has 512K), on board memory (D3 has 8G) and external SD (my D3 has 32G).

//a lack of focused product integration//YES and that is Android's strength. As I have said, Job's was a genius. Let's say he was smarter than 10 people, if you are generous say 100, but no one would say a million. Android is and will be better because it crowd sources the brains of developers to develop whatever they want and yes much of it is crap, but some is gold and the crap will fade, but the gold will be built on. It is a repeat of the Apple vs PC wars and Apple will loose again for the same reason.

Your last paragraph makes no sense as you can't see anything on a LCD or AMOLED screen without a backlight, which is done on all Android phones with a power button, so I assume you are talking about turning up the backlight, which is done with an ambiant light sensor so ??? Or do you have a phone with a Pixel Qi display?
MisterQED, Oct 07 2011

I have an HTC Aria. To turn the backlight up I have to turn on the phone screen, unlock it, hope I'm on the right screen, which is arbitrary since the 'home' button toggles between 2 screens and the phone unlocks to the last screen I used, punch a small icon widget I placed in the top right corner of that screen, and wait.

Regarding the SD memory, that's still an execution error, not of one company, but of an industry. And if HTC really wanted to they could sell their own SD-compliant memory cards that would pass quality control.

I guess it depends on how you define 'winning.' GM sells a lot more Chevy Cruze's than Audi does A8's. But I can tell you which car I'd rather drive. In my estimation, my productivity would increase if I were to spend less time doing PC maintenance trying to wade through the crap. By the time that I do enough panhandling to find the gold, Apple will have come out with another product that again, simply works. I have better things to do than wade through piles of discordant software generated by a million monkeys. And their standardization in their operating system will make it much easier for app developers to port to one standard instead of dealing with a hydra of executions, which delays innovation.
RayfordSteele, Oct 07 2011

I actually find it really interesting that a memorial post to a man worthy of the acknowledgement, if not respect, of all has evolved into a critical comparison of his life's work to competing products of similar ingenuity. I can only speak for myself, but I'd kind of appreciate that. When I die, I want people who aren't fans of my work to speak up and (respectfully) say why they don't like it. Adulation is one thing, but there must be balance.
Alterother, Oct 07 2011

We really need a seperate forum to argue about this kind of thing rather than doing it via annotations. Has anybody posed that idea?

In my opinion comparing the relative features of Android and iOS devices is pointless because of a critical point - usability. Android has a long list of features and neat things that it can do but the execution is rather terrible. For instance, my phone continuously hangs when opening apps, freezes, and is generaly hard to use. It makes Android *feel* like an open source software that was cobbled together from spare parts. You can blame this on the fact that I bought a slow phone that doesn't have a fast enough processor to run Android, but the fact is that Apple maintains enough control over their products to make sure that everything works in harmony. They don't make an underpowered phone and put an overpowered OS on it that runs poorly. It may be missing some features but the ones that it does have tend to work.
DIYMatt, Oct 07 2011

Yeah okay, so I bought an Aria for the small pocket-friendly form factor and good price, not having much experience with the size of apps I didn't really care at the time. Naively I thought that adding more memory to the phone would result in it having more memory. Shame on me I guess.
RayfordSteele, Oct 07 2011

Yes, dammit. I think we should have *more* pointless arguments about operating systems.
