Half a croissant, on a plate, with a sign in front of it saying '50c'

This would work fine, except in terms of success.

Antenna Mirror
For those who can't afford cars with cameras

Trying to back out of a parking space in a small car when you've got a van on one side and an SUV on the other can be a bit risky. You've got to get more than halfway out before you can see if cars are coming down the row towards you. An antenna mirror would solve this problem. It would consist of two parts - a single metal bar that could be hooked into the gaps formed by the edge of your trunk or tailgate, and a wireless antenna that could be raised or lowered from inside the car at the push of a button. Attached to the top of the antenna would be a mirror fed by two images via periscope angled mirrors on its sides. This would let you see cars coming before you were already in their way. A timer would also be included in the kit so the antenna would automatically drop back down after about a minute (to keep you from forgetting about it and driving around with it still up).

Of course it would be easier if all parking lots put convex mirrors on their light poles but since we can't make them do that we should take care of the problem ourselves.

(Couldn't find a link describing this kind of mirror but if there's one out there let me know and I'll delete the idea.)

Something similar? http://www.idealcar...efault.htm?page=241
Mitsubishi has a habit of putting convex mirrors on the back of their people carriers. You can see one in the photo as the back door is up. [wagster, Oct 20 2004]

I'd provide a picture but since I can't draw worth a damn it wouldn't help you recognize it. Visualize a periscope replaced by a telescoping antenna. At the top there would be a mirror-sized lense that had combined images coming from both sides of the mirror into a single image facing the driver. That way the driver could look into his rearview mirror and see a mirror facing him that showed traffic coming from both directions.

I see it. With the initial concept it becomes pretty self explanatory. Don't know if it's baked either, but I like it. [+]

       [+] I like it.

Backing out is one of those things.....rarely does anybody yield and let you get out, and often you can't see anything when you start without backing out some first.

There are some camera systems on motor homes that do this, but I've not heard about it set up or displayed in this manner before.
