First phaze: A series of autonomous sattelites, that read disturbances in the outer ionosphere, and calculate exactly where an event of arouras will take place, and go there. Are sent up to harvest the northern lights.

Second Phaze: After harvesting, the sattelites send down an insulated rocket to earth to specified distributing stations. The rockets are filled with large, lead canisters of charged particles.

Third phaze: The canisters are distributed to either:

Variation one: "Feul" stations with vending macines filled with the canisters (a more manigable size) to directly be used in vehicles.

Variation two: The canisters are still large, but they are sent to stations, and used to suppliment the system outlined in my "road powered vehicle" idea.

Because the harvesting may be costly, this variation will have the system set up to not provide service to vehicles not subscribing to a company that collects the charged particles.

       um... So, so, so many technical problems. So I'll list them..   

       1. The energy of the particles that strike the ionosphere and give off the light is a result of velocity. If you capture them, all you are bringing down is a tub of charged particles. Good luck storing and/or using them in any appreciable volume.   

       2. "large, lead canisters" read as "incredibly heavy" == very very expensive to launch into orbit. What's the lead for, in terms of being a storage medium? Are you expecting gamma rays?   

       3. How are you harvesting the particles? a big sheet of flypaper?   

       4. how do the "vehicles" use charged particles to run? Static electricity motors?   

       Nice try, but I think you'd do better putting large solar pannels in geostationary orbit over the ice caps or something.. save the ice caps and generate power. <thinks for about 3 1/2 seconds about scale, 1000w/m^2 at high angles of incidence, etc, decides that he'd fishbone his own idea, so doesn't post it>

       I suppose you MIGHT be able to use my geostationary polar satellite to keep something stationary near the poles where the aurora goes on...   

       but the science behind that idea is still in debate, more or less. Also, since those satellites would need a powerful magnetic field of their own (perhaps on the order of that produced by the earth) they would definitely disrupt the normally occuring auroras.   

       Beyond that, charged particles would be tough to trap without ANOTHER powerful magnetic containment system, rather than lead cases... and I don't think the energy stored in such a container would equal the energy spent to hold the charged particles.   

       All the same, these lead canisters holding charged particles might be good for producing some sort of "death ray." Just open the lid, and people die as the particles fly out. Hey, watch how you take that lid off!
