A theatre company, normal in every respect other than that the entire performing staff are Autistic to such an extent that they are unable to interpret gestures and facial expressions automatically.
Complex and subtly emotional plays will be a staple of this company. Actors will, through a rigorous
process of observation and study of film footage of people and of people in the flesh, train themselves to mimic the movements, tones and facial expressions and apply these as appropriate in performing the plays.
Obviously, this company land slap bang in the middle of the no-man's land between art, science and laughing at disableds. As such, it will take a degree of determination to win over audiences.

I suspect that the result would be indistinguishable from "method acting", as perfected (?) by Mr and Mrs Branagh et al. |

My wife used to work at an educational center for handicapped adults, her observations were the many of them were already accomplished actors, pretending very hard through the day to understand concepts and act as if they were unimpaired. |

Ech. I don't want to come over all postmodern but there are (at least) two ways to look at this. Either: |

1. This idea is an extension of existing methods for assisting autistic individuals in integrating with society at large, only with this application of the integration techniques there is the added nutritional value of the potentially confidence building act of appearing on stage. At the same time, the performances could themselves be seen as art; a comment on the pretence and artificiality of theatre. And if the acting is indistinguishable from that of "normals", then, yes, the Method will be proved to be arse.
OR
2. This idea is about putting awkward unfortunates on stage and pointing at them. |
