It's the evening: youre exhausted from your tiring day at work, and as you stagger in to your gloomy, cold house, all you want to do is relax. Kicking off your muddy boots, you switch the TV on, turning hopefully to the news. 'And now to our top story - war, death and destruction.' You sigh - its as depressing as always, nothing fresh, nothing new. You collapse, shaking into a sobbing heap. But wait, whats that? Hah, that cant possibly be a real story shes reading out! Laughing aloud, your faith in the world restored, you jump up and down and start to dance with the furniture! This is autospoof, the surprise story that is read out at the end of the news every day. The public gets to submit and vote for their favourite 7 stories each week, and the most popular are then chosen. It makes people want to watch the news, and gives much more enjoyment than normal, gloom 'n' doom 'entertainment'.

I'd have to know the news in order to vote for my favorite. Once I know it, what's the point of broadcasting it?

Watch The Day Today early on - and a bit later (say 10pm) you could then watch 'Brass Eye' and pretend its a serious documentary about science or morals.

That's a cracking link, Ian. So fake news is less informative than real news? You couldn't make it up...

Their methodology involves testing a part of the brain called Shatner's Bassoon for differences compared with a control group.
