Baker Island. It exists. It's uninhabited. It's waiting for us. [link]

There is an airstrip, conveniently unusable by conventional aircraft but adequate for Hullaballoons and ion-drive craft of various kinds.

The remote location means that all of us will have to make a similar effort to attend.

We need permission from the US Fish and Wildlife Service to go there - suggest "Massive Guano Replacement Project" as our cover.

Anyone connected in Washington? I recently spilled a rum and coke on the Commander of the US Pacific Fleet, but that doesn't count.

I hope you don't mind but I wanted to see a photo of the island so I posted a couple of more links.

Halfway between Hawaii and Australia? Good call.

       Suggest Baker Island, Maine instead (44 06 34 N, 68 24 18 W). There’s beer there.

To quote from Croissant Island news (see link) :

"When the form of the island is seen from side, it is not many bizarre, but when you see from the sky once, roughly wonder, the croissant floats in the sea.

With the croissant which floated in such a sea, freely and easily you don't try passing the time of slowly one?"

Makes yer wanna go, dun it?

Actually, yes. And the pictures look quite nice.

       another beauty from that link:

"during of season every year is crowded with the sightseer of the multitude."

I liked the beer section: "The raw beer well the raw beer raw beer. With returning on the same day, still the father who is crossing over by the rental car does not have to be pitiful..." Are they saying that you don't have to worry about a rental car on this island, so you're free to drink as much as you want?

And the water taxi page: "There is also dwarf discount, party trip reduction and disabled person discount."

//or this one!// Excuse me...I believe I ordered the 'large' croissant.

//Everyone beach, calling the seawater bathhouse, not to be the many artificial beach in Okinawa, because it is the natural beach, in the sea the nature is full. //

How about Mt. Baker located in Washington State?
Cuit_au_Four, Aug 23 2005

Most visitors fly or sail right by since there's not much of interest above ground -- the island's colony was abandoned during the war.

But the island is well worth a visit. Take a stroll past the day beacon on the west end of the island and you will find a small door with a brass plaque:

       "International Bakequarters"

Take the lift down to levels -23 and -24 for massive indoor games of custard hypertennis. Or marvel at the tin shoe fashion stores in the arcades of levels -11 to -15.

No visit would be complete without a trip to the Bakequarters gift shop. Hub cap martini shakers, anyone?
not_only_but_also, Aug 23 2005

Do the Baker Island police allow concealed carry of custard guns?
