Bicycle Ignition
Nothing is being ignited, but it unlocks your brakes and shifters. | |
All cyclists must envy their motor-reliant counterparts' ability to control, at the turn of a key, the function of their vehicle.
Cyclists have bike locks, but that is merely the control of the function of a lock. Passersby can still delight in turning the cranks of a locked bike that is not their
own.
Bicycle Ignition is a mechanism that locks the gears and brakes of a bicycle, rendering it inoperable until the rightful owner comes along. [link]

With one of those wire locks, you can lock the gears, spokes and pedals. So, half-baked... as you can't lock the gear-changing to my knowledge. Although; without being able to turn the wheels, gear changing won't normally work. |

I suspect that this system would cost more than the rest of the bike. The kind of bike that it wouldn't cost more than is the kind of bike that you don't want to add the extra weight to or leave out in public. |

It would also more than likely decide to go into locked mode whilst in motion: "Shit - no brakes!" |
|
| |
Therefore it's ideal halfbakery material. [+] |

(If it ever gets done for real, can I have the version that makes the sound of an engine starting when you turn the key?) |

Damn. I though this would have something to do with setting fire to bicycles. |

A bit too expensive for my tastes. Still, some parts of a car starter could be added easily. For example, an alarm, or maybe a headlight activator. Or, for those hybrid electric/manual bikes, an engine starter. No autopilot though. That's pushing it way too much. |
