Seems like if we can breed miniature trees we should also be able to breed pretty miniature flowers. Imagine a plant terrarium with small hills covered in tiny tulips, rose, daisies, etc.. The 'Sound of Music' could play softly in the background while you meditate on this miniature landscape.

Bonsai are not bred to be miniature. They
are genetically normal trees stunted by
confinement and trimming
of the root system. As far as I am aware
flowers and leaves stay fairly normally
sized. |

Bonsai is not about miniature landscapes. That is really suiseki (literally "tray landscape", a term coined by Yoshimura in about 1953) and it already involves some flowering plants. Many people use the term bonsai, but it is incorrect. |

Flowers and fruit are really difficult to miniaturise though leaves react well, especially if they get lots of sunlight and the tree is well fertilised. Take a look at photo~s of Chinese Quince or Nagasaki Crab-apple bonsai in fruit, to see what happens with small, fruiting bonsai. |

The root pruning is more about promoting the growth of fine roots (the ones that do all of the feeding of the plant) and removing the heavy, woody roots. |
