Borate Bouncing Bettys
Grind fire retardant and pour it on fires

The Bouncing Betty was a land mine whose initial charge propelled it several feet in the air when it was tripped.

Then the secondary charge would spray shrapnel.

"Borate bomber" is the term applied to fire fighting aircraft that drop brightly colored fire retardant. The formula has evolved, but the name has stuck.

The Borate Bouncing Bettys would be liberally seeded all over the Southern California landscape. When temperatures flared outside a given parameter, these devices would fling themselves into the air and spray fire retardant.

Description (displayed with the short name and URL.)

I thought Bouncing Bettys were bombs dropped by high-speed bombers that skipped (or Bounced) over the surface of the water to impact with the hulls of enemy warships... oh well, good idea. +

Upon searching, it seems you were right about the name. My mistake, don't know what I was thinking of...

[21 Quest], you were thinking of Barnes Wallis and his dambuster bouncing bombs <linky>.

neutrinos_shadow, Oct 29 2007

Yep, that's the one! I found a Wiki link, too, with a little video clip illustrating the bomb's use. It was initally designed to attack warships, then used against dams later on.

       //Anti-shipping weapon (Highball)

Initially his work on the device was to attack battleships. The bomb could be released away from the ships; the bomb would skip over anti-torpedo defences, and when it struck would roll down the hull to below the waterline, where a battleship would be least protected. An additional advantage was that the bomb could contain a much greater quantity of explosive than a torpedo. This version of the bomb, which was sphere-shaped and dimpled like a golf ball, was codenamed Highball and was developed to be dropped from a modified de Havilland Mosquito that could carry two of the weapons.//

A lot of very depressed campers trying to cook their dinner on the ol' campfire?

the dog's breakfast, Oct 30 2007

While I grew up building camp fires (carefully), these days that sort of thing is restricted to firepits in campgrounds, and one is required to use stoves in many areas.

But perhaps we could include a spicy flavoring in the blend.

I thought I had seen Borat's Bouncing betty's in his movie.

       Very Naaiicce!

Just cause you don't like them is no reason to borate them.

+ yay, I was hoping all was well with you [normzone]!

Thanks, [xandram]. I was one of the lucky ones. While it burned within a few miles on three sides of me, I was deep enough in Escondido that I didn't have to evacuate, just hole up and breath smoke for a few days.

Myself, I'm in favor of artillery launching fire retardant shells - something on the order of battleship guns. On tractor-trailers, and based in every community.

I keep reading this as Borat...
