It seems like the auto companies are struggling mightily, while the oil companies are doing great. Tire prices going up, too. Gas prices are way up now, but they can and do fall occasionally.

As the popularity of leases demonstrates, many already view cars as being "disposable".

So the oil companies should buy the car companies, and mimic the success of the printer makers and the wireless service providers by "giving away the car" so long as you sign a multi-year contract for a specific fuel brand.

I don't get the the "jet" in the title - is it a New World "thing"?

[calum] Am I right in thinking you live in Edinburgh? If so, where? I want to avoid your garage.
Jet is presumably a reference to the filling stations of the same name?

Ah. Yes, sounds about right. Ouch.

Not a bad idea, from a consumer’s perspective, though I’m not sure it’s viable.

One significant downside that comes to mind is that the Oil/Auto industry will not have much interest in fuel economy.

[coprocephalous], HP or Lexmark don't make money on the ink-jet printer, they make money on the consummables, i.e. ink, paper, etc.
