There is always some new portable music player out on the market, whether it's minidiscs, or MP3's. The adapter would simply be built into the face of the cd player or what have you, and one would connect said portable device to stereo with a nationally standard cable that carries power and sound, both
ways if need be.

Ok - What about a wireless interface standard that delivers both the audio and the power. The Audio could be a low powered RF mechanism like Bluetooth and the power could be through an inductance method. |

This way all you would need to do is bring the mobile device near to the "active pad" and it would become a wirelss component of your car stereo |

[cassar] You could absolutely do that with current technology. Just put a "Power Spot" (see link) on the console or other convenient spot, you drop your portable there and it gets its charge. The audio is fed into the car via (dare I say it) Bluetooth built into the car, something Daimler-Chrysler has already slated for next years models (see link). |

BTW, I want this! In my Acura I have a factory stereo system that I am very happy with, but it doesn't know from MP3s. I don't want a new unit in the trunk that I'll have to download the files into, thats too much hassle. I just want to bring my portable with me and have the files play through the car's amplifier. |

Well, I've got an interface for the tape player in my car which encases a tape head and attatches to the headphone socket of whatever you fancy. It came with a power adapter which is easily changed to suit most voltages in a useful range. |

There are also mp3 players which can be inserted and played in tape players using a similar method. |

[yamahito] He does specify that the connection would be both power and signal in a single cable. It would be much easier to use than the currently available solutions, especially in dashboards where the lighter/electric socket is not close to the stereo. So I don't think its really baked yet. |

[yamihito] I know that there are tape adapters. I used to have one. I hate the damn things! On a couple cars, the tape player got pissed off and spit it at me. This is NOT baked. I meant to mention that, but it was late. |

Cassette adapters can be sketchy, and you lose out on a lot of the sound quality by using them. A line-in would be a wonderful idea, if not only because of the quality, but because of the amount of devices you could plug into it with just a standard patch cable. |

This is pretty much baked, in the forms described above, and also as short-range FM transmitters that you tune your car radio into. I reckon FM is a bit more universal then Bluetooth in car audio at the moment :-) |

I have one of those FM adapter thingies. Problem with it is that in the Chicagoland area there isn't a single clear channel anywhere on the FM band (it won't work well if it's within 0.2MHz of a nearby broadcast frequency), and there aren't any gaps of 0.8MHz or more between stations. |

I think you'd want your power and signal cable seperate so that you wouldn't have to worry about interference |

Those FM broadcasters are also illegal in the UK as the government here deems that it owns all the radio frequencies. If you used one, you would be prosecuted for running a pirate radio station in effect. |
