Casuno

The ultimate vicious gambling game.

I'm assuming you've heard of Uno (if not, I'm including a link). Basically it's one of the most vicious, unfriendly, backstabbing games there is, much more so than, say poker.
My idea is to have special casinos (casunos) where Uno is played. Players could bet on each game, but that might get boring, so there could be special gambling cards shuffled into the pack that mean the next person has to put x amount of money into the middle.
Because of the room for revenge etc. during the game, players would need a lot more tactical skills than for poker, which is quite mild in comparison.

Best backstabbing game ever! [sninctown, Jan 07 2009]

A well-played hand of Uno (not unlike standard playing card Crazy 8's or Last Card) is characterised by methodical, almost robotic tendering of the most appropriate card for the situation faced. Ever wonder why some people seem to always win? They play the percentages, doing what is best for them at the time with firm regard for future turns towards the end goal.

Hearts is worse, though. I could probably program my toaster to be fairly stiff competition against the better human players.

Poker, on the other hand, is all about judgement because there are more variables to contend with. It's about informed guesswork and occasional deliberate randomness. It is surely the king of card games.

Who knows though - Uno would probably work in a casino because it can't be any duller than roulette or slot machines.

       //methodical, almost robotic//

That's as maybe, but it's very good for backstabbing etc., much more so than poker. It's not so much a game of skill, more a game of snide remarks and nastiness. Perfect for families [no sarcasm intended!]

What is the motivation for competitors at the Casuno to backstab and make snide remarks about 'the house'? It is too impersonal. If money was involved, I would play emotionless, calculated uno. Uno played thusly - in my opinion - is a dull game whose outcome is dependant (through a circuitous path) on the nature of the hands initially dealt.

Seems like Uno could be made a betting game.

Everyone is dealt 7 cards. One round of betting.

There are several "Bet" cards mixed into the pack. During the game, whenever someone picks one, another round of betting occurs. If at any time someone folds, they are out of the game. If all but one person folds then that person wins the pot regardless of how many cards he/she still holds. AND, if anyone wins by actually going out, then all players still in the game must pay DOUBLE their previous bets. So losing players will be looking forward to "Bet" cards so they can get out of the pot, while the player with Uno is hoping that no one will draw a "Bet" card so he can collect double from everyone.

Hmm...I thought this would involve betting on lawsuits.

if monopoly didn't have a 32 year head start Uno would be the most popular commercial game in the world. being so popular a game would help business all on its own, but having "Bet" cards means higher bets and so more money coming in, too. on the other hand the audience for Uno is mostly or completely families, and its pretty hard to find a family floating around in a casino. it might help to call it something other than Uno, something that reflects that it is posseble to backstab "the house", maybe "jack the house". the color theme of the cards and the names of the cards also needs work, they would be out of place in a casino as is. but over all its a great idea. a croissant for you!

       Thankyou everyone!

I've just read this idea, and there's an Uno game going on in this very room as i type.

Try this with Diplomacy...no game is more backstabbing-encouraging than Diplomacy. Best game ever.

Never tried it. Monopoly is pretty cut-throat... Racing Demon is just violent!
