Cats love to play with stuff. Balls of string, small things that roll, especially ping pong balls.

So use a Pavlovian technique to train the cats to try to get the ball into their goal, dress them up in team-coordinating vests, and pit two cat teams against each other, for the World Cat Soccer Championship.

Lions may play in teams, but I've never seen domestic cats do it. You're working with the wrong animal.

Also, if you want an animal predisposed to playing soccer, try rabbits. We had one that used to dribble the ball all over the floor.

I clicked on this, thinking it would be something different...

sp.//Balls of Sting//! I'm sure Gordon Sumner would have something to yelp about

       Heh. Error noted and corrected.

       You forgot this -> .

Wouldn't all the cats just keep pushing the ball into one goal, regardless of whose team it is?

Still, I want to have a kitten league.

I dont find this as cute as everyone else. I have to fishbone this.

Although, if you used a mouse instead of a ball of string I would have to Bun it.

[jelly], so did I. I was wondering what kind of extra protection Cat Soccer goaltenders would have against those claws and teeth...

[21Q] I was rather worried that someone my see the title, and immediately misjudge it and slap on a fishbone for torturing cats.

Which would be ironic because I love cats.

       Sample commentary please!

Sorta reminds me of C.M. Coolidge's famously lowbrow painting of dogs playing poker in a publicity stunt to drum up interest for a new table games pit.

Maybe Wolverhampton Wanderers could do the same with cats.

What [DrCurry] said. See link on cat training. Negative rewards simply do not work on cats.

Cat behaviour is not focussed on play, but on catching and killing. The play is incidental. You'd have to overcome a lot of instinctive behaviour to teach a cat that giving their "prey" to another cat is beneficial to the team as a whole.

I sooooo misinterpreted the title of this idea.

Speaking of cats learning, having watched my family and I spend so much time watching TV or using the computer, our little ball of fluff has taken to copying us. Only she has never quite understood the function of screens. So she has started sitting on one of the stools, staring determinedly at the wall. Or the fridge. Or the closet. (And no, before you ask, nothing to do with food or pests.)

       [moomintroll]

Nibbelsworth to Senor Paws, Paws heads the ball, but OH! another great save by Winkers.

...and now they're all just sleeping.
