Circular Scrolling

Scroll around and around and around....

For some reason I am always facinated with things like jacob's ladders, you just flipped it and it went on for another rotation; and with fractals, and with that Escher Knot (Mobius loop, thanks [po]). So now that I've surfed the web a bit and not seen it anywhere, I thought I would propose it to the HB community. I want to see a web page that, when loaded, has the scroll bar automatically set to the middle. Once the user starts to scroll, in either direction, the page looks like a normal page, except that once you reach the bottom of the page it doesn't give you an end of file or end of page message, it automatically jumps to the top and the scroll bar is reset to the middle. At first glance it would look like a huge web page, but after a little study a user would notice the same articles reappering again. What would make this even better is if all the information thats on the page would make sense if read in a contigous manner.

(No relation.) A plethora of weird and wonderful web interfaces, some of which involve scrolling effects, but none earth-bound. [DrCurry, Aug 29 2002, last modified Oct 04 2004]

I have always programmed computerized Rolodexes this way - after all, that's the way the real ones work.

Most web pages are designed as analogs of the magazine page or article. User expectations will be quite flummoxed by being flipped back to the beginning.

However, provided the real world analog encourages a user to expect the flip in context, why not? Maybe you can design us a web page that flips back to the "start" for both horizontal and vertical scrolling...a map of the Earth, for example, or a sky map.

Dude, I swear I *just* read that... and that...and that... what's going on here?

you can tell a real Rolodex by its *sweep* - show off, Curry.

I'm not clear on some of what you're saying here barnz.

// I want to see a web page that, when loaded, has the scroll bar automatically set to the middle. //

Middle of what? The screen? Or do you mean half-way down the web page itself? If you mean the latter, that's doable.

// Once the user starts to scroll, in either direction, the page looks like a normal page, except that once you reach the bottom... //

How do you reach the bottom if you scroll up?

// ...it automatically jumps to the top and the scroll bar is reset to the middle... //

What jumps to the top? If you mean that the page automatically returns to the 'top of page' position, then how can the scroll bar also go to the middle at the same time?

I don't understand what you're describing here at all.

It's a little awkwardly worded, but it's obvious to me, pal. Just ignore the bits about the scroll bar, which becomes meaningless in this context.

Factoid: Jasper Johns did a number of paintings which - if formed into a cylinder, would be infinite

DrCurry, I'm not very profecient in HTML, well, actually, I'm not the best of programmers, so me creating this would probably mean you would see the next iceage first.

Waugs, sorry to be vauge but, like Curry says, just ignore my comments on the scroll bar. In answer to your questions though:
(1) yes, set half-way down
(2) well, if you really want to split hairs, top too
(3) yea, the top of page position, but with the scroll bar looking like it's set to the half page postion. If going in the other direction, just rearrange the words to suit your purpose.

Thumb, I knew about those paintings, they were kind of the inspiration as well as Farmer's link. But like my first sentence said, I've always been facinated with circular stuff.
