Clip Circles

 Nah, it's a landing field for small, furry creatures from Alpha Centauri.

Looking down on the tops of people's heads, as I do, it struck me as odd that there are only a couple of variations to be seen... MPB (male pattern baldness), thickets, parts, wigs, etc.

At the very least, a pattern of symbols, like crop circles, dyed or clippered into your barnet would elicit mirth and amazement from people around you. At worst, aliens would attempt to land on your head, as you stroll down the high street, hatless.

Either way, it's gotta be more fun than trying to comb a single strand of hair back and forth across a shiny, nude pate to pretend you're still hairy and handsome.

       I have a query that has been vexing me for some time and it looks like here is as relevant a place to ask it as any:
Does the let's all marked for deletion category apply where the idea, as such, is merely for something we all *could* do (the act of doing something doable and already done not really being that inventive) or does the let's all category require that the idea either entreats or commands everyone or some subset of everone to do the thing suggested?

       I believe it is the latter. Several really great ideas here are very easily done. I believe the purpose of lets all is for ideas that implicitly require everyone's cooperation to function. For instance "let's all send water to a drought-ridden place to turn it lush." The only way it would work is if everyone mailed a flask of water. <*deference to Jutta, below.>

       Ideas regarding fashions (without function, such as hairstyles,) might not seem so much an invention, but there are quite a few ideas on the 'bakery like that. I personally consider it the equivalent of a recipe, but I don't set the pace here. :-)

       What contracts said. Part of the definition of "lets all" is the aspect that it's not particularly original if one person does it. The invention exploits a grand scale, but doesn't have something built into it that would make people behave like that on their own. It's the economical or cultural equivalent of "free energy".   

       Almost anything would be noteworthy if everybody did it at the same time - because it's hard to make people do things. If I'm describing something that everybody has to cooperate on, I get the extra noteworthiness without putting in the extra work.   

       If anyone knows what on earth I'm talking about and can suggest a better name, I'm all ear.

       Trouble is, these things aren’t visible to the wearer. (It was years before I happened to notice my own crop circle, due to some accidental conjunction of mirrors, and thus the horrible truth became known.) So the wearer can’t see it, and besides, already suffering from follicle failure, he hardly needs even more people laughing behind his back. Therefore, this idea is more subtle than a mere “let’s all,” which is generally quite a bit rantish. Rather, this idea has that particular core of stupidity, that kernel of incipient marketing failure that takes it from the realm of the ordinary and makes it halfbaked.

       Where do men get the idea that people laugh at thinning hair? What is comical is the attempts to cover it up with 3 strands, [ala Homer]   

       George Micheal, a local sports reporter had a bald spot on top for years. Rather than wear a rug, he grew the sides out as long as they could stand and not quite look like R. MacDonald. he looked ridiculous and I wrote and told him so. He ignored my great advice, but now suddenly he has very little hair left, has it trimmed neatly on the sides, and is more handsome than I ever expected.   

       I have another story if you can stand it: as there are no immediate protests: Ahem.. I met a guy in a disco,[ 70's yick] who seemed to have lots of hair, was 28. we went on 3 dates before I got to the touching the back of his neck stage. My fingers felt the edge of a full wig. He was bald on top and thin on the sides. I was so disappointed in his vanity, but tried to find a diplomatic way to dump him. I should have been honest. To this day he probably feels women dumped him because he was balding.

       I have a head that, if shaved, would probably look a lot like a well-scrubbed potato. If I start to develop MPB, which is unlikely, I'll take the option of looking like a potato, rather than a loser.
