Clock/Calculator Potential Word Analyzer
Flip it upside-down

Develop a program that with the knowledge of unabridged dictionaries of multiple languages, discovers all possible words that can be conveyed with a standard calculator or digital clock if it is viewed upside-down. Clocks would, of course, provide fewer chances for words to exist. Are there any letters of other alphabets that would be the flip side of one of the ten digits?

Shouldn't be hard - get coding.

wagster, Aug 21 2004

[tom], you obviously weren't talking to me (probably obvious only to me, since no one else knows what I look like), but that would be 55378008 07734 if you want it to be read correctly if someone decides to flip their screen upside-down.

Ah, now I get it, [tom]. I bet you get tons of chicks with your calculator magic. ***bats eyelashes***

It doesn't get much better - how could it?
Now, you'll have to excuse me, I have a line of hot girls waiting for me to astound and amaze with my latest calculator action...

"Develop a program"? Give me a break. The realistic version of this is a one-line egrep, perl or sed command.

       egrep -i '^[izehsglbo]+$' /usr/share/dict/words
egrep -i '^[izehsglbo][izehso][izehsglbo][izehso]$' /usr/share/dict/words

But is automating this old schoolkid trick really an original invention?

       Four-letter clock words:
bees begs Bess bibs bile bobs bogs Bois boos Bose boss eels gels Gobi goes Gogh gosh Hebe Hess high hiss hoes hogs hole hose Isis isle lees legs less lies Lise Liss lobe logo logs Lois lose loss Ohio oils ooze Oslo sees shoe sigh silo size sobs sole solo zoos

       Non-clock calculator words:

Love the idea of calculator haikus - little did the creators of the calculators know that their machines would end up being used to display words that were never envisaged as part of the original design, in an artistic installation.

zen_tom, Aug 30 2004

       Thank you, Jutta.

jscottpete, Oct 06 2004

I cannot believe Jutta baked this!

Incidentally, which other hb ideas have subsequently been baked? (Obviously no-one will admit to baking the secret hat.)

wagster, Oct 06 2004

[wagster] We collectively should be baking some halfbakery ideas.

jscottpete, Oct 11 2004

Heck no, Wagster. I mean, I can see how one might not be inclined to do that. +

sartep, Oct 11 2004

[Jutta] Remember, the first digit of a clock can only be a "1" and sometimes a "2". And then there are the three-letter clock words:
