Collapsable Pocket Ruler

Because a tape-measure is too mundane.

Have you ever seen those toy lightsabers with collapsable cones for the blade? Well, this is a ruler that uses the exact same principle. Each inch collapses into the hollow inch below it, all conveniently fitting in a pocket-friendly, one-inch configuration. Measurements are written along the slanted edge so there is no distortion when lying it on its slanted side to measure. Or is that last part necessary?

I dont think it would be to accurate. The wear and tear put on it along with the exact tension required to make "perfect inches" would not work that great.

       Heh - still uses "inches".

They use folding rulers over here. I've never seen one used in the UK and have never seen a tape measure used over here. They take a bit of getting used to but they're great. Not floppy, you see.

True, they're a bit longer than one inch and don't fit in a normal pocket but they cunningly get round that problem by having an extra deep, narrow pocket on the leg of all work trousers.

I recently read that US paper money is 6 1/8" long, so can be used as a rough estimator of the length of something if you find yourself without any other way to measure.

Knowing the length of your span and top thumb-joint is also useful. My span is around 20cm across, top thumb-joint about 2.5cm. Use them lots for estimating.
