Collider City
Co-locate physics experiments with urban transportation | |
The core of Collider City are two circular tunnels with a circumference of 100km.
The tunnels are multipurpose: As well as particle colliders, they house a circular metro line (one tunnel for each direction), and a conveyor belt system for delivering goods.
Above ground, the urban area extends
no more than a short walking distance beyond the central tunnels. The center of the circular city is reserved for agricultural and recreational land.
The waste heat produced by the particle colliders is used for district heating.
This way, building large experiments like the cancelled Superconducting Supercollider might become more economically feasible.

Two problems, two words, radiation and terrorists. The first is in in the collider and you want to keep away from people the later are in the people and you want to keep away from the collider. |

The amount of kinetic energy stored inside a particle collider at any given point is not that high. What happens when someone detonates a bomb? The vacuum chamber ruptures, air rushes in, the high energy particles collide with the incoming air molecules and generate a mini nuclear explosion. This creates a burst of gamma rays, neutrons, and a few other short lived species. Most of these get immediately absorbed by the concrete walls and ground surrounding the tube. The amount of long lived radioactive matter produced is tiny. Unless there were people inside the tunnel near the explosion, radiation would not affect anyone. |

The level of accuracy necessary in a particle collider would make almost any repair unbelievably hard. Since they are assembled in order replacing one of the sections in whole may require complete disassembly. |
