Cushions Of The Settee

Wild, independent, magnificent.

After countless thousands of hours of watching BBC Wildlife programs while the kids who had been watching them went outside to play and left the DVD running, the cushions on our sofa have begun to evolve cilia on their fabric, it seems.

Yesterday I watched in terrified amazement as one, then another, then another of the cushions slid gracefully off the couch and slowly made its way across the floor.

They followed the same path, tumbling to the floor and moving up the hallway in a long, meandering line until they were all gathered at the front door.

Finally someone opened the door and they began to move again. My wife managed to catch and turn back some of them but most of them made it, struggling down the step and heading for the gate. I followed, video camera in hand. Alas, I forgot to turn it on.

Outside, I realised I was seeing something special... there were thousands and thousands of cushions gathered and attempting to cross the road. The grasslands of the park opposite were multi-coloured, with vast herds of them all heading to a place only they knew and understood.

I look forward to their return in the autumn. Apparently they return to the very same room from which they came, to give birth to their young. And so the cycle begins again.

An appropriate time of the Lemmings Cliff myth to resurface.

Talk about falling off cliffs. I had a construction accident today and dislocated and broke my ankle. I grabbed my foot and put the dislocation back in immediately but the break will take a titanium rod and a few screws once the swelling goes down.

Note to self: Don't step backwards over a 2 metre drop onto concrete.

       That sucks.

Bloody hell, [UB], that sounds nasty. Hope you're a fast healer.

Codeine is my friend. A fitful night's sleep and I feel about 85% this morning. The doctor who treated me was terribly impressed that I managed to get the ankle back in so quickly. I did it while there was still plenty of adrenaline on board. On the other hand,I had a lot of nitrous oxide and a shot of Toradol on board when they set the ankle.

I got to the emergency department and told the doc I had snapped the end off the right fibula. Xray confirmed it. You know the bump on the outside of your ankle? That bit broke loose.

Wife dropped me at the front door of Emergency and went straight back to work on the house. It's for sale at the moment so she was finishing off painting and a bit of carpentry that I would have done. She got it all done by 4pm, too. Very keen buyer looking at it this morning.
