It's well known that Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" album corresponds amazingly well when played along with "The Wizard of Oz" with the sound turned down. Many audio cues on the recording coincide perfectly with events, many seemingly related, occuring on the screen.

The powers-that-be (in this case, MGM/UA and EMI/Capitol) should get together and produce a DVD of the film with Pink Floyd's audio on a "commentary" track, already in place and synched.

Yay. Must have missed this last time around.

I originally had a site linked with a list of "synchs", for people unfamiliar with this phenomenon. However, that site has turned its breasts skyward, and I can't find another I'm satisfied with.

My money’s on Roger releasing it himself.

       That's a great link, thanks 3f!

There is one annotation from the original post that bears repeating, from blahginger:

"Sidenote: When asked to comment on whether or not Dark Side was written around the Wizard of Oz drummer Nick Mason said "That's ridiculous...everyone know's it's based on 'The Sound of Music'"

I know this has been screened theatrically (midnight movie - style). The problems you're looking at are 1) brokering a licensing deal between media behemoths [keeping in mind that MGM might not want the Wiz "family values" tarnished by association with some kind of "head" music] and 2) determining wether there's an actual market for the thing.

I seem to recall that one of the Turner stations (TBS/TNT? not sure) aired the film a few years ago, with "Dark Side of the Moon" playing on a secondary audio channel.

[waugs], that was July 3, 2000, on Turner Classic Movies (TCM). I hoped it would be an annual event, but it wasn't. [link}.

I had no idea about this and the thought never occurred to me. Now I want to experience this crazy thing myself. Sign me up.

[XSX], the synchronicity is great fun! I was at a friend's house when I tried this, and it was tricky getting the movie and CD all started correctly. I followed the Oz Sync List, and read off each one as it happened. Even my skeptical friends found it to be "freaky".

Did the 2001/Echoes one last night, and can confirm it's a match made in my own personal idea of heaven.

Damn, and I just watched both 2001 and 2010 this past month or so. Too bad I already deleted it from my TiVo. I don't even own the proper albums, come to think of it.

I imagine this would be fun to do at a party - have the music on with the video playing and just see who notices weird coincidences. :) I'm sure it's been done.
XSarenkaX, Mar 14 2003

Would 2010 be done with 'Momentary Lapse Of Reason', or some similar perpetration?
-alx, Mar 14 2003

Wasn't that on a bittorrent site?
lawpoop, Jul 21 2003

Having no idea what a bittorrent is, I cannot answer that question.
waugsqueke, Jul 21 2003

Bittorrent is a distributed download client.

Recently, several popular bittorrent websites went down, probably due to legal action.

I got a torrent file for the Dark Side of Oz; it appears to be a rip of the DVD-r that's for sale at that site.

I deleted the torrent, and now torrentreactor, bytemonsoon etc are down and I can't find it.
lawpoop, Jul 21 2003

Yep, The Dark Side of the Rainbow is already on DVD at SyncMovies.com along with others like Toy Story /Toys in the Attic, and Black Sabbath / Exorcist. And they're all real. A+++. Questions? TronicMale@yahoo.com

That's got to be hugely illegal.
waugsqueke, Mar 14 2004

Well, that's technically true, but it had to come from somewhere, and we are seeking to make these legit.
MortalForm, Mar 15 2004

Oh right, well, um... good luck.
