Well, there you go, you've just written the HB equivalent of The Bible or Les Miserables or The Complete Proceedings of the Municipal Department of Picket Fence Painting 1970-1985, and some horrible poster deletes it.

Now you can look it up to keep your online deus-ex-machinas viewable to the world (or at least other like-minded HB'ers), can link directly to it (which may be a suitable compromise with the poster) and if you're the poster who sneezed and clicked, you can at least cut'n'paste the original text back in after hearing the immortal words "YOU DELETED MY ANNO!!!"

[edit] original anno'er can delete it from the delete file.

       In a world where everything is archived forever, it's refreshing that here things can just be deleted and go away.

       If you are unreeling the results of days of research and labor into a tiny little text field -- that's a little risky... why not just write it as a text file, save it someplace, and copy-paste it in?

       If the anno gets deleted, you can add it as a tangentially related anno on someone elses post. Everyone will have the naggling feeling they've seen it before, but they won't be able to prove it.

       so... are we also talking about people who delete their own anno's? (or edit them capriciously?)

iron_horse, May 30 2008

       There are penalties for making a habit of deleting annotations... see Help file.

       It is quite annoying to be wondering what the hell people are talking about on annos because a crucial post is gone. If they were being offensive or spamming I wouldn't mind so much, but it seems the system just eats them sometimes.

       its called swiss cheese, Jim. Talking to myelf seems a natural pastime of mine.

       One of the three posts I've deleted annos from contained a better-than-usual chain of humourous asides which I would've liked to keep except it was blocking the (rather important to me) discussion of the post.

       //I am eating a sweet potato.//
so that would be 4 for, 4 against, 1 digesting ?

       I guess nobody does.
