Do List Cheat Sheet

It works. It helps.

Create a hierarchy of needs and wants categories which covers everything you would ever need or want to do or purchase. Compromise the hierarchy to some extent to cluster certain categories based on criteria such as categories that contain frequently purchased items. Occasionally or regularly peruse this list to create a do list or grocery list.

One might think this is excessive organization, but it need not take up too much of someone’s time and can in fact be time saving.

The best ideas are inspired by life experiences but this could also be used as a Half Baked Idea Cheat Sheet. Every element of civilization is a service or product to satisfy some need or want of humans, and would therefore fit into one of these categories.

I have my list printed up in very small text on strips of paper that I use the backside of to compose an actual do list and purchase list. Folded once over it fits in and is protected by a book of rolling papers which fits inside my wallet. My list is as follows (What have I missed?):

Water
Air
Sleep
Exercise
Sex
Temperature Reg.
Food
Lighting
Clothing
Toiletries
Medicine
Vitamins
Stationary
Pets
Tools
Toys
Furniture
Bedding
Shelter
Storage
Energy
Waste Disposal
Recycling
Laundry
Transportation
Communication
Computer
Schedule
Relations
Education
Entertainment
Green
Reading
Movies
Music
Memorabilia
Science
Environment
Debt
Business

Sorry buddy [Detly], I don't know what to tell you. I'm spent and about to watch a movie with my girlfriend. Tomorrow I'll reevaluate my explanation.

Requires too much prescience to be practical. At least for me.
bristolz, Mar 29 2004

The halfbakery categories and subcategories would make a good list.
FarmerJohn, Mar 30 2004

I find this fascinating, because jscottpete's list reads as the exact reverse of my list of needs - "Business, Debt, Environment... Air, Water". Spooky!
Harry Mudd, Mar 30 2004

I'm just wondering how often you shop for air or sleep.
GenYus, Mar 30 2004

Some people will buy *anything*. <remembers cupboard at home full of bizarre gadgets and twiddly things> ermm......

You need air more urgently than water, because without air, you'll die much sooner than without water.
cocktaillouie, Mar 30 2004

Since water is a very large constituent of blood, without which air would be of no use, I'd say you need water more.
bristolz, Mar 30 2004

I've used generic shopping lists and packing lists for years. So what's new?
phundug, Mar 30 2004

Gee honey, looks like we're fresh out of air. I better go shop ...
FarmerJohn, Mar 30 2004

[GenYus] I said these were catagories not the items themselves. For air I might purchase an air purifier. for sleep, perhaps some melatonin.

[Toadinnov] Lithium is an enemy of what this site is about, I think.
jscottpete, Mar 30 2004

Reminds me of the Franklin Planner System, where they have pages for 'Values and Goals.'
RayfordSteele, Mar 30 2004

[RayfordSteele] Is that a system for disfunctional people? This is not.
jscottpete, Mar 30 2004

Last I checked, weed doesn't make you forget such things.

[scout] I hope no one takes your comment too seriously. It might reinforce the rediculous belief held by many that it is a good thing to put marijuana users behind bars.
jscottpete, Mar 31 2004

       [jscottpete], I agree with you.

I don't think it is good idea to put marijuana users behind bars. They might spill the tequila.
GenYus, Mar 31 2004

[GenYus] I think it is more likely that those concentrating on the tequila consuption would spill the tequila.
jscottpete, Mar 31 2004

//belief held by many that it is a good thing to put marijuana users behind bars.//

I agree with you. it' a lot cheaper to shoot them then send their families a bill for the cremation.
UnaBubba, Apr 01 2004

[UnaBubba] I hope you don't really believe that:(
jscottpete, Apr 01 2004

[scout] If you really do use my list you may want to exclude "Green". Or not. By the way, I posted it as I have it on my list, in one column. But the Halfbakery put it in rows. All is good.
jscottpete, Apr 01 2004

If you want your list in a column, type < br > without the spaces after each word. Like so:

water
air
sleep
exercise

see?
lintkeeper2, Apr 01 2004

Which reminds me, must purchase more pot.
eyeguy, May 04 2004

This is just an amplification of Maslow's Hierarchy of Man's needs...what's the point? Organising is supposed to save you time and make your life easier. I can't see this system achieving either. Sorry boet.
