Drive Alive Lollipops
For those long, dangerous, Easter trips.

Road tolls rise markedly during public holidays and long weekends. Many of those deaths are down to driver fatigue. This should be fairly easy to prevent, or at least alleviate.

The Drive Alive Lollipop is a slow-dissolving candy, consisting of hot, sweet, sour and salty layers. Some of the layers are very high in caffeine, for a sudden jolt every half hour or so.

Sure, sugar keeps you awake, and caffeine-rich drinks are great for waking you up, but they have that nasty diuretic effect, too, making them a bladder bomb as the caffeine is delivered in a large quantity of liquid.

Salt gives you a quick adrenaline rush, as does chili.

Other layer flavours include beer, salt & vinegar and beef jerky, among many.

NB Regular rest stops and short bursts of physical exercise are still recommended, as part of a safe driving regimen, on long drives.

       Sudden salt load causes an increase in adrenalin? I know it can cause headaches but didn't know about the adrenalin thing.

       I had a problem a while back, with drowsiness, in early afternoons. I would fall asleep briefly, at my desk. My GP told me that a salty snack raises adrenaline levels very quickly. Skeptical, I tried it. To my surprise, it worked. Not a lot of salt, but two or three Saltine crackers is enough to trigger the effect.

       Maybe you should try sleeping for more than 4 hours a night. Perhaps if you put a saltine under your pillow?

       It doesn't affect me that much. It's the tens of thousands of people who will die needlessly on roads this year because drivers don't/can't stay awake.   

       Maybe I should put it under my pillow. i can't put it under the bed: Everyone knows that's where the reds are.

       I can’t vouch for the full mechanics of this as I don’t ingest sweets or caffeine, but I’ll swear by the effects of salt. A friend advised me once – keep a bag of salty chips in the car for those lengthy road trips. 20 years later I still do. It perks me right up, and quickly. (+)

       Fries, even 2 fries short of a happy meal, are good for re-energizing while on a drive - combination of simple carbs and salt.
