A lot of vehicle accidents are caused by new drivers underestimating the vehicle's acceleration and applying too much pressure to the accelerator.
I realize that the whole point of Driver's Ed is to teach them caution, but many of these accidents happen *in* driver's ed, and the training vehicles
used in my class were old ridiculously heavy, under-powered four-bangers. Not something that's gonna prepare a new driver adequately for the new Mustang his dad's gonna buy him when he graduates.
So my idea, to help new drivers learn how much pressure to apply to the gas pedal, is a boot that restricts the movement of the foot, making it difficult to fully extend the ankle and thus fully depress the gas (and brake) pedal.
I say the brake pedal, as well, because slamming on the brakes in heavy traffic can cause accidents almost just as easily as slamming on the gas.
The boots would be custom-fitted to each trainee, and adjusted to provide just enough flexibilty to allow the right amount of movement.
Parents wishing to reward their son/daughter with a cool ride can now do so with less worry, because they can get another special boot for the kid to help train them for the specific vehicle they'll be recieving.

Nothing is fool proof, not even fudge. Why not outfit the car with an under the dash plug in that controlled the ability to "accidently" over accelerate? You push to hard on the pedal and you just dont get the response you would without the chip. |

When I was learning to drive, I would practice slo w l y rotating my foot down to the floor from a seated position (I'd practice this in the house, before getting into the car). It took a lot of control to learn to do this non-jerkily. I recommend that all beginning driving students practice like that before getting in. |

I wonder if they should institute a horspower tag or something. If the car has higher than x horsepower:weight ratio, you need to pass an additional class / training to legally drive it.
Buying a 16 year old a Mustang GT or Camero SS does not seem wise to me. I would think someone ready to throw that much money away (when the car's power gets away from the young driver) could afford an additional performance car drivers training class |
