Driverless Roads

No more cars, no more the causes of cars

Forget about driverless cars, each with their individuality and separate node-ness.

If all the roads, everywhere, were active and were able to make anything on them “go”, you wouldn’t need cars. Just place everything that has to be “somewhere else” on the road, and off it goes, to somewhere else.

There could be many ways of effecting the knowing of the destination, from printing out a QR code and sticking it to the top surface of the parcel, cat, people etc that are going somewhere. Maybe then point the top surface down on to the road so that the road can see it, or maybe leave it pointing up and have a camera try and decipher it through the dense cloud cover.

There could be many ways of locomotion or traction, for example, like those air puck tennis games, or linear motors (which may erase or reset prosthetic hearts or minds). Or just be pushed along by specific traction “engines” (not traction engines, they’re old) if there’s a group of stuff that’s all going in the same direction for a while, and can be scooped together.

So, those air-tube delivery thingies and moving walkways like they have in the Jetsons, then?

A surface made up of thousands of little legs (not unlike the underside of a starfish) might provision a general purpose, multi-directional locomotion function. Different sized legs might provide differing levels of precision or speed. There'd need to be some awareness/executive transmission between the objects being transported and the underlying surface, That might be simplified via some kind of intelligent label that knew its position and orientation and could transmit a context-aware signal (saying "North!" might encourage the surface to do some Northward action) until such time as the road ran out or the object got to where it wanted to be.

A fun idea, and liable to the usual malfunx.

       Smart road:

" Hey, buddy, glad to see that you need to get to San Francisco, I'm going that way ! "

       Person in S/R compatible chair:

" Thanks, but I need to get to Santa Fe. "

       Smart road:

" You got it, let's go. We'll be in Oakland in a few hours. "
