[Scott_D]'s idea got me thinking; if you're stuck without a driveway heating system, next best thing is a snowblower; problem with these contraptions is the snow right on the driveway gets impacted and turns to ice which the blower won't pick up.
Solution ? A sonic ice shatterer; basically just a speaker tuned to the frequency which shatters ice; hook it to the front of your blower and pick up *all* that nasty white stuff.

And that would be...?

How about a net of tiny explosive charges ? Throw it down and light the fuse .... then, like a Chinese Cracker, a rapid sequence of tiny explosions shatters the ice.

Base the pyrotechnic composition on sodium or potassium chlorate and the resultant reduction products will have ice-melting effects, too..... and there will be the heat of combustion to add to the effect.

Sort of like a Bookrest, for snowy driveways !

Ah. I was hoping for some kind of heavy duty land ship you would keep behind the garage.

Remind me to buy lots of plexiglass and window tape.

Please don't bring that thing to the pond during the winter while kids are skating on it.

I was thinking specifically of a box 4" x 24" (or whatever the width of the snowblower) which would ride 1/4" above the ground... probably wouldn't do anything to 6" of solid ice but hopefully will powderize the crap stuck to the driveway that everybody slips on.
