Drownproof Swimming Pool

The pool is "Locked", sir.

Simple. Prevent drownings by putting a metal grille in the pool, to be lowered to the bottom while the pool is in use and raised to the surface of the water (Locking the pool) when it's not.

Child drownings in pools are far too common, all around the world. This is probably about the same price as a pool fence and safer.

And a safety net, to ensure you don't end up in someone else's backyard.
UnaBubba, Jan 07 2008

how would you deal with pools that have non flat bottoms?

Perhaps if you had a sort of door that rolled up at one end kind of like what you find at store entrances in shopping malls.
jhomrighaus, Jan 07 2008

good idea [Jhom],but would not work for any shape other than rectangular or triangular, odd shapes need a custom made grill. or net as [RayfordSteele] says.
dentworth, Jan 07 2008

What about a set of Lexan Shields kind of like what you see around a hocky rink that retract into the floor around the perimeter of the pool. When down they are invisible, when up they form a transparent but otherwise impenetrable barrier around the entire pool.
jhomrighaus, Jan 07 2008

Some municipal swimming pools already have moving floors, and presumably you could make a version that could be raised to the top of the pool. A simple grille like this might be the better option for a domestic pool.
Srimech, Jan 07 2008

A false bottom could address these shape issues, and be raised/lowered, Thunderbirds-style depending on usage. One minute, an attractive patio, the next, a childs paddling pool, the next and whoa! an Olympic-size diving pool!

Jump in too deep, get foot hung in grill, drown. Ta-da!

Can we have one where the grid mives down from above once the pool is in use ? That woul be ever so Ernst Stavro Blofeld ....

I originally thought this would have a problem with pools with shallow and deep ends, but if you did this with a flexible fine screen (holes smaller than a toe/finger) spectra (or similar) mesh, which was lifted by electric winches, it would be invisible when down, while adding some traction and could actually be used as a life saving device to lift drowning people to the surface! (+)

Oops this seems to be the Rescue-o-matic.
MisterQED, Jan 07 2008

How would you keep the mesh down on the bottom?
jhomrighaus, Jan 07 2008

//How would you keep the mesh down on the bottom?// Tension, provided by a rachet (not dogshit or catshit) system. However, I do remember this being proposed in an annotation on some gelatinous pool life-saving idea, previously.

Many pools have covers. These could serve the same purpose. Should serve the same purpose.
bungston, Jan 07 2008

How would you keep it on the bottom? Hmmm, I forgot Spectra floats. How about you weave in small flat weights?
MisterQED, Jan 07 2008

If you make it out of a strong fabric rather than metal, it could double as a trampoline for when the kids get bored of the pool.
hidden truths, Jan 07 2008

Pool covers here are basically heavy duty bubble wrap. They are very dangerous if you walk on them, as they can wrap you up and limit your movement while you're struggling to stay above water.

It's illegal to have a pool without a fence in most areas of Australia. Due to the high rate of pool ownership we have a lot of toddler drownings driving the safety process.
UnaBubba, Jan 07 2008

       Same laws apply here.

Metal + chlorine = expensive and difficult cleaning job. I think I'd do some kind of plastic job. But yeah, closing off the top of the pool seems a much more obvious solution than my rescue system. There should be some way to incorporate the pool cover.

I'm really curious about when they invented the Katchakid Pool Net System now. That thing doesn't look that safe to me. If you were to improperly space out the attachment points or should it stretch over time, a kid could get caught underneath, I'd think.
RayfordSteele, Jan 07 2008

There is a company that does pool covers that supposedly are each strong enough to hold an elephant.
BJS, Jan 07 2008

How abouts the grille is made of an organism, genetically engineered, that expands out over the pool and retracts if something touches it from the bottom?

What? What do you mean, that's impossible? I do *not* read too much sci-fi!

       [4whom] //ratchet...// Nice.

Well I like it. I'm voting yes.

Plus you could electrify it, when you have annoying neighbors over to swim! Muhahaha!! Muhaha--

Good quality stainless steel and chlorine seem to coexist quite peacefully. At least, they do in my pool. Maybe mine is the only one?

I intended the mesh be fine enough that limbs, even of children, will not fit through it and become trapped.

       // A puddle? //

A human child can drown in fifty millimetres of water (if, that is, if you keep your boot firmly pressed on the back of their neck. It even mutes the screaming; and added bonus !)
