I thought of this while reading some of the feedback to an earlier idea I had (Computer dump site.com)...The suit would need to be made of a thick rubber material to avoid the occasional dirty needle prick or sharp knife stab (also handy if joe bum gets upset when you disturbed his sleep)...A helmet with oxygen supply would be useful for that hard to reach trash as well as avoiding the smell...Multiple pockets would be a must and perhaps a belt with clips for clipping heavier objects to free your hands...perhaps some sort of camera device could be placed in the helmet so friends could see the treasures below...The downside to all this wonderful gear is that running from the cops or store owners in 170 pounds of diving gear wouldn't do you much good...and trust me, the cops will harrass you

another idea not worth posting by itself but equally as useful is a robotic trash picking device fitted with camera and arcade skill crane (i love those) feel free to elborate on this one

Annotation:

Nitrile would be a good material to make this out of. It is puncture resistant. I've seen it made into work gloves(especially for chemical handling) and thinner medical gloves, but certainly not a full body suit. I believe that one man's trash can certainly be another man's treasure, so enjoy your baked goods, certainly _not_ out of a dumpster.

BinaryCookies is right. Dumpsters can contain treasure ... I've raided a few in my time and retirved some stunningly valuable and useful stuff ......

       Waste is WRONG. Recycle !

I don't think I've ever actually gone *in* the thing, (okay maybe once, to retrieve a valuable dropped in there). I just take note as to what's sitting around it.

Anyone interested in the "Barbie Bake With Me Oven" I just saw in the dumpster in the alley behind my house? It's right on top. No suit necessary.

you know,.. once something is placed inside a trash receptacle of any sort, you are legally allowed to pick through it all you want, super high-teck dumpster suit or not. that is why credit reports and shit found in garbage cans outside of offices can be legally used as evidence in court. so lets start manufacturing these, k?

Since i can't stand to see anyone lose out on valuable trash it'll be play till you win...only a buck...all the good stuff will be too big for the crane anyway

<cautionary tale>The council in my home town provide five skips to chuck large items of rubbish in. To make it easier on people's backs, they are partially sunk in the ground. In this way you can drive up to the side and heave rubbish in fairly easily. The design also promotes the syndrome "reckless rubbish chucking" whereby you are very tempted to launch that old TV (which has been gathering dust in your hall for months) with considerable gusto, just to hear the almighty crash when it hits the base of the skip.

Imagine a certain halfbaker's surprise when said TV does not emit the expected smash, but instead seems to generate a muffled clump and slight groan. A quick glance into the skip revealed a completely prone rubbish raker next to a slightly dented TV. Oh dear. Your man was OK - after a quick trip to the hospital, but let this be a lesson to would be intrepid dump explorers. Perhaps we need to rebrand this idea as an aid to a potential new extreme sport?</cautionary tale>

Wraith, at least in Australia the contents of a dumpster belong to the person who put it in, until it is taken away. I do a lot of diving (for lumber mostly) and once won a "free trip in a police van" because of this.

I use to dive at least once a week...i stopped after i was stopped inside a dumpster with a pocket full of lipstick samples and a bag of foundation...the cops had a good laugh at my expense and sent me home... (the make-up was for painting...i swear)
