Companies that make backpacks might find it profitable to enhance their product with an inner lining that was edible. That way if you were out hiking and got lost you'd at least a little extra to eat, improving your survival chances if you were really really lost.
Wonder what other things people
might be carrying along with them that could have an edible enhancement added for survival purposes.

Mad Magazine in the 80's had an issue with a survival belt. A star map was punched into the belt, and a compass built in into the buckle. The belt was made from beef jerkey. |

Leather shoes ( and candy floss beard). |

What might the lining be made of? You would want it to be somewhat impervious to heat and water, of course. And the more calories, the better. |

Hey Thelma so what's the way outa again. Just a second Fred let me look at the map again. Uh, fred you seen the map? Uh oops I was hungery.. DOH.. |

You're always carrying some around.... In a life or death situation, you can always tourniquet a limb, cut it off, and eat it. Not for the squeamish, but we're talking survival here. |

Oh, and this idea seems on the verge of "calling for a list". You might save it from MFD by proposing some method for how such a lining might be truly dual purpose. |

I like the idea of edible anything! Except vegs.
Vegetables aren't food... They're what food eats! |

neilp - I like the walking cane idea. Haven't check to see if anyone's made one that's fillable but it seems like they should. Since I like to use a wooden staff when I'm out hiking (therefore carrying the weight anyway) it might be helpful to have a hollowed out one that I could stick something useful in. |
