Enormous Artificial Platelets
Vague idea. Need help on this one.

1. How do platelets work in blood clotting?
2. What could easily manufacture gigantic platelet-like items from easily available waste (perhaps PET bottles?)
3. How effective would artificial macro-platelets be in temporarily patching the dam, in circumstances such as the recent New Orleans in America situation, or any situation where for example, a river needs to be 'turned off' or diverted from an unwanted course until a more permanent construction can be arranged.

       Would it be possible to seed the water with grains that activated on being turbulated, perhaps becoming more and more adhesive?   

       I'm assuming that there is a minimal amount of turbulance in a naturally flowing river, and water coursing over a levee might be bashed about.

       Yep. They'd have to have aspects of their shape or form that caused them to 'catch' each other, as a strong tendency. They'd also have to have some means of catching each other in pretty much any degree of overlap, that tries to prevent liquid flowing between them. Now, does this mean they have to be absolutely watertight, or just have a tendency to cause flow to go round or over, rather than through?

       The only problem is to entice a few to stick solidly to the solid bottom and thereby serve as a foundation for further accretion. Others suggested air dropping tons of debris into the watercourse, likely to cause collateral damage or to liquefy an already weak and waterlogged earthwork wall. Still others suggest airdropping pylons to embed deeply into firmament and serve as anchors, likely to cause not only the aforementioned damage but also possibly sever underground utilities to tactical facilities or isolated areas.
