I'll cut to the point - an escalator with specially large platforms that could hold luggage, or wheelchairs/prams (pushchairs) etc. It would be a cross between an elevator, and escalator, and a paternoster. Open top cars, which travel up a track, move into a loading/unloading bay (to let others by) and
then go back down again. It would work like an inclined paternoster, but cars would move into the loading bays when called. The good thing about this idea is that it could work on multiple levels, with loading bays on each level. It would be free for the disabled, but would cost a small fee for people with excessive luggage (shopping, example.)
Etc. Escalator?
http://targetcultur...arget_escalator.jpg Many newer multi-level Target, K-Mart and IKEA stores use a special escalator which accomodates shopping carts. In other parts of the world a similar product is known by the brand name "Vermaport". Typically they operate without a fee to the user. [jurist, Jan 06 2007]
