Fake ATM
HELLO !... HELLO... Hello... hello... ello... llo... lo...o... | |
This would be a trojan of the ATM world. It looks like a real ATM and can be found nearby a bank or supermarket, but only for advertising purposes.
When someone uses it for whatever reason, it alerts the bank that they've suckered another one and transmits the user's personal details back to the bank,
because it can. The bank owner who receives the notification can further work with a security system to tell it to record the timecode for the video cameras at the precise moment said sucker uses the fake ATM, so the staff at the security firm can derive a further profit line from data collection, on behalf of their clientele.
Like any other ATM it can also be used for robberies and vandalism so the local police can take the rap for being soft on blameless crimes against property and on minor assaults, rather than use public resources to nab real crime suspects.
The beauty of this one is that the owner has a captive audience to which it can advertise until the user presses CANCEL. Cheap to set up and cheap to keep; this is targetted marketing at its best.
Accepts Fake ATM Cards.

Good thing I leave my fake ATM card in my fake peanut brittle can. |

I wonder if credit card companies could set it up so that if a card was reported stolen and someone tried to use it an alert would automatically be sent to the police (or store security).... |

Hey, I think this can be a marketable idea - just change the concept a little. Instead of swallowing the card completely, just have it play commercials. Have it accept someone's card, say "Thank you for banking with UB industries. One moment please..." at the bottom, play commercials up top, and wait for the customer to get annoyed with waiting and press cancel. You'd get money from advertisers for guaranteed eyeballs while just having to pay for a box and a video screen. Make sure to put a sign that says "we charge no ATM fees" on the front to help attract clients. |

A guy in my city was busted a few years ago for retrofiting a temporary night deposit box over a banks existing one, and then removing it once people had willed it with money. Not at all the same I guess, I just felt like adding something to the conversation. |

Several gangs have now done that with ATMs in sundry parts of the world. The most brazen was recently in NYC, where the thieves placed a card reader over the card slot, and a camera pointing at the keyboard to monitor the PINs. All caught on video tape. |

This would just piss me off. If I'm in a hurry to get my money, I'm not going to want to waste my time at an ATM with no money in it. |
