Fire Distinguisher

What if there's a fire?

It's not always that easy to know wether there's a fire or not. Think of all weird chemicals and composites there are out there today that generates heavy smoke without the slightest flame or spark. And what about smoke machines? Certainly no fire involved there. I guess you catch my drift. The "Fire Distinguisher" is a ground breaking product that will save millions of precious tax dollars. Why, you ask? Well, think about it. From now on fire departments all over the world can actually determine before hand wether to drench a building, vehicle or person in water or foam or to simply roll over and fall back to sleep. And it's great to for home use aswell: Combine it with your standard, off-the-shelf smoke detector and you have a idiot-proof fire security system. No foam or water will be spilled without proper cause. It's the Fire Distinguisher, ladies and gentlemen. There can and will be smoke without fire, and when this occurs, you'll be the first to know.

How it works: The device has a "lens" mounted in the front. Aim this towards the center of what you think may be the center of the fire (i.e. at the center of the smoke) and a wide-angle thermo-sensor will scan the area and determine wether there is a heat source intense enough to actually be fire.)

       How does it work?

Hmmm... there appears to be heavy smoke in the corner. But these days, you can never tell if smoke comes from fires or not. So you run and grab your handy dandy fire distinguisher. You point the lens...alas, it says 'low battery'. You grumble, and take your trusty Fire Distinguisher to your stockpile of batteries left over from the y2K scare. You return to the site of the mystery smoke, but you took too long trying to open those dang batteries and are now trapped in your fiery grave.

The technology is already baked in commercial fire detection systems. Once again, you can have them at home but will pay more for the device.
UK advertising campaigns are simply trying to get people to fit conventional (cheap) fire alarms that work with, up to and including, heavy cooking.
They still save lives though.

move along, nothing to see here folks. according to the fire distingisher its just steam. i could have sworn i saw some flames....boy, you never know these days.

I'm here because this occurred to me last night, but I don't know the mechanics of how to bake the idea. I'm guess mass spectography, but it's only a guess.

I have a home smoke detector that will go off at a well done grilled cheese sandwich, but will let me build a two foot thick layer of incense under the ceiling, so I guess I can't complain.

Fashionable anguished retard uses wether to distinguish fire, wether it succeeds or not.

This is an excellent idea, and could be used to distinguish the flammable from the inflammable.
MaxwellBuchanan, Dec 25 2019

Flammable or actually on fire? Most materials are flammable. A pattern of thermal image and material database would be needed to extinguish doubt.

"Wether": a castrated male sheep; it sometimes has a bell fitted, but it's not the same, you know.

Amateur robot builders sometimes have firefighting robot competitions. My understanding is that these robots usually use ultraviolet sensors to find the fire, but that knowledge is about 15 years old.

[jnystrom] created their user account on March 01 2004, then created this idea.

They never again posted on the Halfbakery, although the user name is seen in some other traffic on the internet.

It appears that experiments with fire proved unwise.

Fire is a good servant, but a bad master; hence the phrase, "Kindle not a fire you cannot extinguish".

Said phrase was also Amazon's inspiration for the now discarded marketing tagline " You're distinguished - Fire up your Kindle ".
