Use gyroscopes or even GPS definition to control whether a gun will fire, making shooting yourself in the foot, or your buddy while you're turning, quite impossible.

About forty years ago I saw a description for a gyroscopic shotgun lead calculating device which would certainly have been posted here had here been there then.

As I remember, the instructions at about step 74 read something like "You realize you forgot the ammo. Go back home to get it, and pick up more beer."

Why not just learn how to handle a gun?
FunkyMunky, Mar 12 2006

I think it would be pretty easy to design guns that could only fire when pointed in the direction of a special target. But that wouldn't necessarily guarantee someone wasn't in the way.

But in general, if guns are going to have any value, it's because we can use them as needed to shoot at will. So I regard this as counterproductive as the other gun limitation mechanisms.

(TC), do you have your finger inside the trigger guard and point the gun at your buddy at the same time? Odd definition of buddy.

I'm confused as to whether most objections are to guns or to gun safety. [DrCurry], I get your point, but safeties exist, after all.

[normzone], tell me you've never seen someone turn at a range, even a beginner.

Muzzle sweeps happen. But start loading electronics onto guns, and you'll start having electronic issues. Your choice, but I'm an old fashioned guy until the new technology is shown to be reliably better.

Interesting choice of category. I'd have put it in product: weapon: aim

Gun accidents usually happen because people defeat the safety features of the weapon or somehow find a way to circumvent certain procedures that are intended to prevent an accidental discharge.

There are some sci-fi schools of thought featuring smart guns and ammo: You wave the gun in the general direction of your targets, it reviews the picture and launches self-correcting bullets at appropritate times and they track down their targets.

I could see incorporating this idea if you'd reached that level of technology, but not before.

On that topic, any interest in starting a Halfbakery Shooting Society? The match categories would certainly be interesting.

Depends - who do you want to shoot?
