This new gutter design could be built to operate in either a manual or power mode. In its normal position, the half-cylinder making up the main portion of the gutter would have its open end facing up. When it was time to clean it out the cylinder would be flipped upside down via the axles on each end (manually or electrically). The axles would be sitting in slots so they could be vigorously shaken to empty out any sticky leaves. Once the gutter was clean it would be flipped back into its normal position.

       Alternatively, have them hinge at one end of the run of guttering, with a releasable catch at the other. Then you'd need a long pole.

       I agree that this idea should be baked. As long as you don't have to stand under the gutters to operate them.

       I think this is one of the best (if goodness = utility x implementability) ideas I've seen here in a while.

Corners and joints needn't be a problem - if the guttering is not blocked and if the overlaps and slopes are right, you shouldn't need a watertight seal between the components. Brilliant idea - go patent!

       [+] nice & simple & neat.   

       The devil's in the details, and I fear that:   

       1. The hinges would get rusty lock up with leaves gunked in them.   

       2. You can't rotate the part just above the drain, so any clogs there would still have to be cleaned out in traditional ways.   

       3. It'd be hard to prevent leakage where they rotate, and leaks tend to cause water stains & such. But a very good one, anyway.

       To avoid streaking gunk deposits down the side of your house I would favour a system that moves the guttering away from the house by about 6" before dumping it's load.
