Its a miserable, rainy day, and you're on
your way home from work. Deciding to
catch the bus, you dash to the bus stop,
just in time. You sigh with relief, and
reach for your bag to get out some
change. It'll take 2 hands to get in there,
though, so you balance your umbrella on
your shoulder,
fumbling for your wallet.
Suddenly, the umbrella slips out, soaking
you! You drop your bag in shock,
contents
spilling onto the puddley pavement.
As you kneel on the wet ground, to
retrieve your belongings, the bus drives
away, splashing dirty water all over your
new shirt.
In other words, a nightmare, but one
thats
easily prevented with the Flumbrella.
Basically, it floats above your head,
shielding you from the rain, and at the
same time sending a warm breeze over
your head. Propeller driven, you hold
onto
it with a wrist-strap as it hovers above
your head. Its safe, as theres a cover
ensuring you don't get caught in the fan-
blades.
It folds up to nearly the same size
as a normal umbrella, due to the absence
of handle, and comes in a range of funky
designs. It's so much less awkward than
conventional umbrellas, and much less
embarrasing, and more effective, than
head-umbrellas.
Its also green - a mini wind turbine at
the
top point of the Flumbrella gives power
to
the engine, and it stores energy for
calmer
days. It also has a solar charger, which
you
can leave on a windowsill in the day, then
plug it into the Flumbrella at night.
Its a real answer to all those problems!

Does the prototype design team have a weight estimate yet? I'm not sure I want one of these hanging over my head. |

Well, this would be a bit cooler than those silly hat umbrella things.
"Nice haircut!", "no, heavy rain" |

well the spars, turbine, fan-blades and
engine casing would be carbon-fibre,
and
the engine would only have to be very
small |
|
| |
it would make a beep (or maybe it could
be modified to play your favourite song)
when it only has 5
minutes of battery left, when you can
then
unhook your telescopic handle keyring,
and lock it into a small slot in the centre |

What makes this better than an umbrella hat? |
|
| |
hmmm, if enough air air was forced downward from above an umbrella the negative pressure and its shape should generate lift without having to get your hair mussed. The umbrella would have to counter spin against the rotation of the prop though. |

It would reqire counter rotors and and a power sourse
how about solar panels
then it would work well on bright days too |

I agree that the video is terminally lame. This falls under the heading of "I thought it was a humorous reference, but nobody else did". |

Since your opinion has been seconded by [Jutta], I'll remove the link. |

the charger is solar powered, but
attatching solar panels to the flumbrella
that would produce enough energy to
power it would probably make it too heave |
