Flute Straw

Something for the kids: suck to drink, blow to play

The inner straw would look and function like any drinking straw. An outer, concentric tube with simple “reed” and finger holes would start about an inch from the mouth and end halfway down the drinking straw’s length. A valve flap, normally in suck position, would expose an opening to the flute when one blows into the straw, allowing musical fun instead of bubbled beverages.

I really like this idea. The catch that I see is that you would have to expose the outer surface of the straw where the flute holes are, out of the drink, to make a sound. So it would either have to be a long straw or a straw withdrawn from the drink to work.

Also, in simple instruments like recorders, air flows both out through uncovered holes, and out through the base. So how will you allow air to pass through the bottom of this flute?

I've tested the straw flute as in the link, but with finger holes.

[tz] It plays and bubbles well with the bottom submerged and at least one finger hole open above water, but is a bit messy.

[blissmiss] Like the epiglottis opens or seals off the larynx, this valve should keep Bessie breathing though inebriated.

[polartomato] That's why the flute straw ends halfway down, maybe 5" of a 10" drinking straw. If I have at least one finger hole open, I get the same tone whether or not I close the bottom.

"Suck! Suck! Suck! Suck!" ... "She's gone from suck to blow."

       These would sell.
