Flying gum
My chemistry is lacking but the thought is there | |
Hydrogen is easily produced; whether from a solid compound
or liquid compound, a lot (volume-wise) is produced compared
to initial size.
My idea is that every pack of gum comes with maybe 2 or more
pieces (maybe every other piece) that when chewed produces
hydrogen quite rapidly, allowing
floating bubbles to be made,
smaller lumps of gum to be spat farther, kids to test the
flammability of the gas itself.
I hope this is baked (I want some), Links encouraged. [link]

This could be fun, but all chemical methods I know for making hydrogen involve chemicals you don't want to put in your mouth. |
|

One method uses aluminum foil that you throw into hydrochloric acid. If you swallow aluminum foil you could start burping hydrogen. Any volunteers to try? |
|
| |
How about the carbonic acid in
saliva reacts with some calcium in the gum makeing H2
and CaCO3? I dunno what calcium carbonate would taste
like though... |

3g stick of gum. Lift of hydrogen in air: 0.0012 g/cm^3.
That means 2500 cm^3 of hydrogen needed to float. 4/3*
pi*r^3=v. a few calculations later..... we'll need a
spherical bubble with a diameter of 16.8 cm, not too
unrealistic |

might be a bit annoying to have floating chewing gum getting in people's hair and the like, and not sure how you're going to get all the hydrogen from the reaction inside rather than outside the bubble. Is gum hydrogen tight ? would any rxn be unpleasantly exothermic ?
//kids to test the flammability of the gas itself// erm.. flammability of hydrogen in air ? |

The chemistry sounds shaky, the idea seems dangerous, the viability seems dubious. I like it. Totally halfbaked [+] |

//I dunno what calcium carbonate would taste like though...// I believe that you can get Tums, Maalox and Mylanta in a multitude of flavors these days. |

My bad chem is just an example, maybe have some
compound react with some other compoud in the other
piece, this is doable with some better ingredients. |
