Often when walking at a decent clip, or running it is often necessary to stop abruptly. As there are few mechanisms allotted to humanity for braking beyond the pads of our feet, a person may rear up onto their toes, flexing their calf muscles, to dissipate the momentum via vertical travel.
This opportunity
to utilize this wasted energy is obviously very tempting. One of my rejected ideas involves always wearing a top hat, however I will let your own creative speculation surmise as to why.
This particular Forward Momentum Dissipation Machine utilizes the same vertical motion of raising oneself onto the toes, but in a modified foot appliance. The shoe will have a steel frame installed that connects to the sides of the sole of the shoe. It will appear to be a toe guard, but can move one hundred and eighty degrees until having the appearance of a heel guard.
Once the wearer stops abruptly, they rear up onto their toes, which is covered by the toe guard. The Forward Momentum Dissipation Machine then supports the weight of the person and they continued forward until they land completely stopped with the device resting at their heels. Heres a "drawing" for [phlish]

Sounds like broken ankles to me, but I understand the concept. |

Ah... April 20 - exactly halfway between April Fool and Mothers' Day? |

add an energy storage device, then give it to basketball players so they can "charge up" with frequent stops and then release the energy for a 4' vertical jump. |

It needs to stop in the vertical position when all kinetic energy has been converted into gravitational potential energy, if you let it proceed to the heel guard stage you will release the energy and dissipate it as you hit the ground. |

Someone once posted something like this for cars and [FJ] did a hilarious illustration for it. Found it. (link) |
